The Tasman Bridge is a five-lane bridge crossing the Derwent River, near the CBD of Hobart, Tasmania.
On Sunday January 5, 1975, at 9:27pm, the Tasman Bridge was struck by the bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra, bound for the Electrolytic Zinc Company with a cargo of 10,000 tons of zinc concentrate (AusStats, 2002).
The bridge officially reopened on October 8, 1977.

The Tasman Bridge is a graceful 1.5km long, five lane, concrete-arch span that crosses the estuary of the Derwent River, thus connecting the city of Hobart (the capital city of Tasmania) with the townships on the eastern shore.
The Lake Illawara was deemed unsalvageable because of the close proximity of the hull to the remaining bridge.
A temporary floating bridge was also built about 10 km to the north, and it was (some years later) replaced by a second permanent bridge across the Derwent.

One of Hobart's landmarks is the Tasman Bridge (1964), which spans the Derwent River in a bold arch, borne on numerous piers, linking Queen's Domain with the suburb of Montagu.
Eleven years after its construction a cargo vessel rammed one of the piers, threatening the bridge with collapse and a replacement bridge was built a few kilometers north.
The Tasman Bridge is now once again operating normally.
