Glaciers of New Zealand (part 2)
Where the larger glaciers extend to low-gradient or ponded ice trunks at valley floor level, recession is evident by a steady lowering of ice-surface levels, accompanied by little or no change in terminus position, or by the development of a proglacial lake.
Unfortunately, the fluctuations of small glaciers cannot be measured or monitored, because the spatial resolution of Landsat MSS and RBV imagery (79-m and 30-m picture elements, or pixels, respectively) is not adequate.
Glaciers are particularly useful for the study of present and past climatic variations.

Now approximately 28 kilometres long and 600 metres deep the Tasman Glacier is melting at a rate of about 30 metres per year.
Also the Tasman Glacier terminus has changed from solely a melting terminus to what is now a “ melting and calving “ terminal face.
This meltdown results in an accumulation of debris originating from within the glacier to be left marooned atop the huge river of ice.

A Glacial Christmas - New Zealand - Mark Moxon, Travel Writer
The trek to Ball Shelter, over 9km of rocky paths from the ice-face of the Tasman Glacier (the 'terminal', as it's known), was very pleasant as we followed a small valley, surrounded by steep, rocky slopes on both sides (where avalanches frequently happen in winter).
However, what we didn't realise was that this valley was running up the west side of the Tasman Glacier, so when the track finally went over the top of the little valley wall, there was the glacier laid out in front of us.
The hut is precariously balanced on the side of the glacier, so that about 20 feet from the front door is a long, vertical, 150m drop into the depths of the glacier; it's some view.

This far down, however, the rocks and boulders that the glacier has carried down the mountain are left on top as the ice around them slowly melts.
The part of the glacier that we saw yesterday was in the ablation zone, which is where the glacier loses ice.
Because these glaciers are found in a temperate climate (a place with warm and cold seasons), there is quite a bit of ablation by melting each year.

In the distance, the smooth surface of the Tasman was broken by a few giant crevasses but mostly it was a velvety white desert of fresh snow.
