MV Tasman Spirit and pilot Nasir were waiting for the tugs to be free and it was only after 12:40 hours that mv Tasman got the go-ahead to move towards the berth.
MV Tasman Spirit was left at the mercy of strong winds, confused water currents and strong monsoon currents.
Tasman Spirit, carrying 67,500 tons of crude, ran aground outside the channel leading to Karachi Port during bad weather and a high monsoon tide.

Violent monsoon weather had caused the Tasman Spirit - en route from Iran to Karachi, Pakistan carrying 67,000 tonnes of Iranian crude oil - to run aground while navigating the straits leading into the port of Karachi on 27 July.
Three failed attempts were made to tow the grounded tanker and 20,000 tonnes of oil were salvaged before, on 14 August, the Tasman Spirit’s single hull began to crack, rupturing the vessel in two and spewing its toxic cargo into the Arabian Sea.
The Tasman Spirit was just one of Malta’s bulging fleet of ageing single-hulled freighters, like the ill-fated Erika and others, that have constituted an environmental hazard of global proportions as they plied the world’s seas.

Investigations by the Herald indicate that from the time that Tasman Spirit was beached, the negligence and indifference shown by the KPT and the PNSC bordered on the criminal.
The two authorities neither had a contingency plan to deal with the situation nor was their top echelon even aware of the standard operating procedures that are to be followed in such situations.

Tasman Spirit wreck removal is complete
Due to the time constraints placed by the approaching monsoon season, and the previously unknown extent of the damage sustained by the Tasman Spirit, a combination of patching and lifting was employed to expedite the wreck removal whilst allowing for contingency planning.
However, the seven crew of the Tasman Spirit, together with the Greek salvage master, remain hostages held under spurious criminal charges filed by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

The Tasman Spirit - a Greek-registered, Maltese flag-flying oil tanker - carrying approximately 67,500 tonnes of Iranian crude oil for the PNSC (Pakistan National Shipping Corporation) from the Emirates, bound for the Pakistan State Oil refinery, drifted perilously close to the Karachi harbour, became grounded, and in the process developed cracks along its base.
An insider disclosed that the pilot, Nasir Javed, who was one of the key players in the Tasman Spirit debacle, was reportedly involved in at least four other accidents last year, and it was incomprehensible to his colleagues why he had been allowed to continue with his duties given his track record.
Some technical experts meanwhile, point out that since the vessel split within the channel and not outside of it, this indicates that either the channel had not been properly dredged, or the pilot had been provided charts which were erroneous or outdated, which would lay the blame squarely on the hydrographer.

The oil content also affected the dissolved oxygen content of seawater in the affected area as 16,000 tones oil 51 per cent of the total oil load in the tanker reached the seabed when the tanker sunk.
Report revealed, the oil deposition occurred because of the extreme turbulent mixing of the sea by strong monsoon winds after the spill, which caused the oil to attach to the suspended sediment and sink to the seabed and the seabed remains heavily contaminated.
Studies estimated that about 12,000 tons of the Tasman Spirit oil evaporated in few weeks after the spill and this toxic plume drifted with onshore winds over a heavily populated coastal area.

Thirdly, the treatment of the Salvage Master for Tasman Spirit - and the Master of the Prestige - reminds ISU members that salvors, as front-line responders, are vulnerable.
Salvors are not responsible for casualty events giving rise to pollution, but, when rendering salvage services to such casualties, they are bound by the Salvage Convention 1989 and by Lloyd’s Form, if that salvage contract is being utilised, to use their best endeavours to prevent or minimise damage to the environment due to pollution.
