Tassilo III - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tassilo III was duke of Bavaria from 748 to 787, the last of the house of the Agilolfings.
Tassilo, then still an infant, began his rule as a Frankish ward under the tutelage of the Merovingian major domo Pippin the Younger (later king Pepin III) after Tassilo's father, Duke Odilo of Bavaria, had died in 747 and Pepin’s half-brother Grifo tried to seize the duchy for himself.
Later, in 757, the Royal Frankish Annals state that Tassilo became Pepin’s vassal for his lands at an assembly held at Compiegne, where he is reported to have "(sworn) numerable oaths" to Pepin upon "relics of the saints" and "promised fealty to King Pepin and his sons Charles and Carloman".

Born in 741, the year his father founded the monastary at Niederaltaich, Tassilo III was as much a patron of learning and religion as he was a dynamic, autocratic ruler who forged a sense of Bavarian independence and patriotism, through his opposition to Charlemagne, that has lasted through to the present day.

The Holy Roman Empire, which Napoleon finally abolished in 1806, was a failed attempt by the church to revive the glories of the Roman Empire in a Europe that was sunk in the Dark Ages of ignorance, superstition, and tribal warfare.
The spiritual influence of the western division of the church expanded simultaneously, in particular during the pontificate (590-604) of Gregory I. As the political prestige of the Byzantine Empire declined, the papacy grew increasingly resentful of interference by secular and ecclesiastical authorities at Constantinople in the affairs and practices of the Western church.
