Tat Tvam Asi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tat Tvam Asi (Sanskrit: तत् त्वम् असि), a sanskrit sentence, translating variously to "Thou art that", "That thou art", or "You are that", is one of the four Mahāvākyas (Grand Pronouncements) in Hinduism.
The Dvaita interpretation holds that it is actually 'atat tvam asi', which means You are not that.
The Advaita interpretation holds that the essentials of 'tat', translated as "That" and referring to the Ultimate Reality, (In Hinduism called Brahman) and 'tvam' (this individual soul called jiva) are exactly the same.

tat tvam asi - thou art that or a more orthodox translation is 'you are that truth' Now let us analyse what that really means.
Krishna (God) is the Absolute Truth (tat) and since we are His children, we are also 'tat' just as I am Tandon for the fact that my father is. Self-realization really is to understand who we really are.
The moment one thinks that now (s)he has realized that (s)he is 'tat' so (s)he has become that cause of which (s)he is the effect, (s)he would automatically become unrealized for (s)he at that very moment denies the status of Truth to his/her own cause.

So that text “Tat tvam asi” means absolute oneness of Brahman and the individual soul, which we should realize when we drop the imagined distinctions produced by avidya.
“Sa atma tat tvam asi” is read as “Sa atma atat tvam asi” or “That Atman, thou art not.” Regarding the text, “ayam atma Brahma” Madhva says that it is either a simple eulogy of the jivatman or it is a subject for meditation.
In the light of this doctrine of difference-non-difference, the famous text “Tat tvam asi,” is interpreted with “Tat” signifying the eternal, omnipresent Brahman; “tvam” referring to the individual soul, whose existence depends on Brahman; and “asi” brings out the relation between the two, which is one of difference compatible with non-difference.

"Tat" is a word that denotes the "Brahman" by the qualities of Brahman like being the cause of the universe, having the universe as his body, infinite etc. "Tvam" is a word again denoting the same "Brahman" by the quality of Brahman which is having Swetaketu (Jeeva) as His body.
The word "Tat" denotes the Brahman by his qualities like "Being the cause of the universe", "having the universe as his body/mode" etc. The word "Tvam" also denotes the same Brahman by his quality of having the Jeeva as his body/mode.

Every Jiva individually is the body of Isvara, just as the Cosmos as a whole is. The 'Tat' of the statement refers to Iswara who resides in the Cosmic Body and the 'Tvam' refers to the same Iswara who indwells the Jiva and has got the Jiva as the body.
Tat Tvam Asi declares that oneness of Isvara.

 Tattva-muktavali (Mayavada-shata-dushani)
The Mayavadi commentator on the Vedanta claimed that the words tat tvam asi are the maha-vakya, the most important statement in the Vedas.
According to this explanation, tat means "the Supreme," tvam means "you," and asi means "are." He interpreted the phrase to mean "you are the Supreme" and he claimed that there is no difference between the Supreme and the individual spirit souls.
According to his explanation, tat means "of the Supreme," and the entire phrase means "you are the servant of the Supreme." In this way the proper meaning of the scriptural statement is clearly shown.

Sri Visistadvaitha Tutorial - Lesson 11
The verse of the Veda "Tat Tvam Asi" is understood clearly using the concept of "Saamaanaadhikaranyam" as follows: The term "Tat" (that) denotes the Brahman on the grounds of its attributes/modes namely "being the only cause of the universe", "having infinite divine characteristics", "untouched by all impurities".
The term "Tvam" (you) denotes the same Brahman on the grounds of it having the Jeevaatman (Chit) as his attribute/mode.
Therefore the Sareera-Aatma Bhaavam (Body-Soul relationship) between the Universe and the Brahman is clearly told by the verse "Tat Tvam Asi".

In the next line She is also referred to as Bliss, while Dea as Being — both the Being of the universe and the Being that lies beyond it — is the subject of these two verses.
In the previous verse it is explained that Dea is the That (tat) of the Upanishadic Tat tvam asi ("That thou art"), in other words, She is the Absolute Brahman or Deity.
Now it is made clear that she is also, in essence, the second term:thou (tvam: root tv/tu, common to Latin tu, Greek thu, German du, and English thou, from earlier thu).
