The company has just bought stakes in the large Watawalla tea plantations of Sri Lanka and is in the process of acquiring gardens in African tea growing countries in a bid to become an international tea major, M H Ashraff, executive director of Tata Tea Limited, said in Munnar, Kerala.
He added that Tata Tea is also exploring the huge United States' market for ''iced instant tea.'' The company has already set up a subsidiary in Florida to reprocess the basic instant tea from the Munnar plant into consumer packets of American regional preferences.
The Tata Tea executive director said the company was going in for selective mechanisation of the tea forming and picking operations in the face of labour shortages and high wages.

Tata Tea is one of the 25 companies that have expressed interest in buying the state-owned Societe Marocaine du the et du Sucre (Moroccan Tea and Sugar Company), which is popularly known as Somathes.
According to the last compiled global tea data, China had exported 49,540 tonnes of tea to Morocco and was one of the largest exclusive suppliers to Somathes.
Tata Tea officials were out of the country and did not respond to queries today.

New Delhi: A city consumer court has asked Tata Tea Limited, an agent of an overseas insurance company, to pay up Rs 1, 00,000 as compensation to an importer which was forced to accept the meager claim amount after the damage of its consignment.
The Commission headed by Justice J D Kapoor rejected the contention of Tata Tea Limited, a settling and survey agent of Commercial Union Co. Plc, a Singapore based insurance company, that the complainant was not a consumer as per the law.
"The objection of the OP (Tata Tea) that the complainant is not a consumer does not hold water as the complainant had obtained the Marine Insurance Policy against the payment of consideration therefore comes well within the definition of consumer," the commission said.

Low tea prices will hit profits of Tata Tea Limited this financial year, but a cyclical recovery is expected next year, the firm's executive director said on Tuesday.
Trade officials said the average price of tea in the January to June period this year was Rs 59.4 a kg against Rs 67.81 per kg in the same period last year.
But branded tea accounted for only 45 per cent of total tea sales in India and price-sensitive consumers tended to shift to bulk tea when the prices were falling, he said.
