The bitterness of the Tatars stems from their perception of centuries of Russian exploitation, an influx of rural Tatars and refugees fleeing ethnic disorders in the republics of Kirghizia, Uzbekistan and Tadzhikistan.

The Crimean Tatar population which was estimated to be over five million during the height of the Crimean Khanate rule, decreased to less than 300,000 on the eve of the Bolshevik Revolution.
