All three composers featured on Tatiana Nikolayeva's August 18, 1987 Salzburg Festival recital were central to this pianist's repertoire in concert and on disc.
Nikolayeva's phrasing of the exposition from the Musical Offering's 3-part Ricercare proves less studied and more direct than in her later, more refined studio traversal for Hyperion.
No significant differences mark the four Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues when compared to Nikolayeva's famous studio recordings from the same era (Melodiya/BMG 1987 and Hyperion 1990), although she shapes the E-flat minor Prelude's bleak tremolos with more urgency and dynamic build in front of an audience, while the D-flat Fugue's cross-rhythms are less-assuredly defined.

Nikolayeva's life is a testament to fortitude, loyalty and high art; the world of classical music is surely diminished through her absence.

Guardian | Shostakovich: 24 Preludes & Fugues Op 87: Tatiana Nikolayeva
The generation of Russian performers to which the pianists Tatiana Nikolayeva and Sviatoslav Richter as well as the original members of the Borodin Quartet belonged were Shostakovich's contemporaries, and their recordings of his major works, together with those of Mstislav Rostropovich and David Oistrakh, define an invaluable performing tradition.
The Borodin were the first quartet to record a complete cycle of Shostakovich's string quartets, or rather the 13 that had been composed when they made their recordings in the early 1970s.
The Preludes and Fugues of Op 87 were written for Nikolayeva, and she unfolds every one of them with the same tact and clarity she brought to her famous recordings of Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues.

Supposedly at an International Bach Competition (which Shostakovich was adjudicating and from which he would return to the Soviet Union, inspired by Nikolayeva to write his monumental 24 Preludes and Fugues for her), the final phase of the competition consisted of playing one of the fugues from the Art of the Fugue.
When the panel asked Nikolayeva which one she intended to play, she responded, "Which would you like?" Needless to say, she won.

Winner of the 1950 Bach Leipzig Piano Competition, Tatiana Nikolayeva (1924-1994) made a great reputation as a virtuoso-pedagogue in Russia and in the Soviet bloc countries, but only found fame in the West in the 1980s with the relaxation of political tensions.
Sober and facile, Nikolayeva’s keyboard style has an elegant clarity of line, a light hand, a vigorous rhythmic propulsion, and a resourceful control of her dynamic palette.
Although Nikolayeva’s staccato runs are fierce, they likewise emanate a rounded dynamically shaded tone, so her illusion of legato or over-legato is of a single cloth, a piercing yet eminently dance-like effect.
