Tatra (car) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1920s, Tatra developed the chassis concept that was to last: a rigid backbone tube with swinging semi-axles, first appearing in 1923 on the Tatra 11.
Tatra immediately started legal action, but the matter was not resolved until 1961 when Volkswagen was ordered to pay 3,000,000 Deutsche Marks in damages.
Tatra T603s were built until 1975, a twenty-year reign as Communism's finest car.

Tatra succeeded Nesselsdorfer in 1923 and designer Hans Ledwinka revolutionized existing design principles by creating a frameless car with a large diameter backbone tube, in place of a conventional chassis.
This Tatra 11 was succeeded by the improved model 12, which was built until 1930.
The rear-engined 2960cc model 87 was the successor to the Tatra 77.

In Tatra's case, at least, that impression is very unfair, because up until World War II, the Czechoslovakian company built some of the most advanced and imaginative automobiles of the era.
The car he designed for this purpose, the Rennzweier, had a top speed of 53 miles per hour and met with moderate success before Nesseldorfer management pulled the plug.
Ledwinka's first design for the new Tatra marque was the T11, one of the most technically advanced cars of its day.

Trams, Trains and More - Leipzig: a low-floor heaven 1.
I thought this was a substitute for the sightseeing Tatra tram due to technical problems, it had had to be out somewhere in town.
Exactly it's one of the two motor cars and a trailer which have been rebuilt with panoramic windows in the roof (and looking at the windows I think these are also equipped with an air-conditioner too), this is the first of them.
In the foreground there is a "Grosszug", a large train of two Tatra motor cars and an NB4 trailer (you can see the middle car in the previous, short lived livery, the Leipzig trams had been the usual cream colored ones before this one, just like at most German towns).

My car is Tatra 700 model, a Czech made, I'm from Czechia too.
I'm sure that this is a great car, though since 1996 the plant hasn't presented any new models.
It is not important really, because having Tatra 700 for almost 10 years and covered with it nearly 600 000 km I can't censure this...

 TATRA
The first racing success was achieved Internationally In 1925, when a Tatra car with independent suspension of all wheels, backbone frame, and an air-cooled engine won the 1925 Targa Florio race in Sicily, regarded by many as Europe's toughest trial.
During 1934, the Tatra Works again surprised the automotive world: a fully streamlined sedan was produced, with a V-8 air-cooled, overhead-camshaft engine powering the monobuilt body, the first car whose body's final form was determined in the wind-tunnel of a near-by airplane factory.
This was to permit the car's entering a more economical tax group (a very important detail in Europe), and to make the engine consume less fuel (for gasoline was then rationed, expensive, and of inferior quality) without sacrifice of too much in top speed.

Much of Tatra's unique character and fame, Ertl explained, came from the fact that it was the second-oldest automobile manufacturer in the world next to Mercedes-Benz that was still producing cars today.
The cars are constructed on a steel frame with the outer panels made of duraplast, a plastic resin (related to formica and bakelite) reinforced with cotton fabric.
The car was a favourite of communist officials in Czechoslovakia, modelling itself on the Russian-made Volga.

In 1936 Tatra built a prototype of a small mid-sized aerodynamic car with an air-cooled engine in the rear.
This car was a sort of a small version of the bigger T87, incorporating aerodynamic design with an air-cooled rear-mounted V8.
For several years during the 1930s - whilst Tatra was working on the construction of the 1931 and 1933 rear-engined aerodynamic prototypes and Porsche was developing the Volkswagen (VW) KdF-Wagen - Hans Ledwinka and Ferdinand Porsche regulary met to discuss their automotive work and designs.

After the communist revolution in 1948, Tatra specialized mostly in truck production and the passenger cars were only manufactured in very limited numbers to be used by ruling elite.

Romanian Armour in World War Two
While experimenting with armoured cars during World War One, the Royal Romanian Army's first tanks date from 1919, when seventy-six Renault FT's with a French tank regiment serving in the Balkans were abandoned by their owners and impressed into local service.
Armoured cars were first employed by the Romanian Army during World War One, with a local conversion of a flat-bed commercial lorry carrying a pedestal-mounted cannon and a pair of heavy machineguns that allowed for both antiaircraft and ground fire in 1915 (also described as having large spoked wheels with solid tires).
Some of these older light armoured cars were still serving with Soviet units in 1941, so it's possible a few may have been captured by the Romanian Army, though in light of their limited combat value and likely mechanical unreliability any subsequent service would have been brief.

Another little snippet that you'd be wise not to share with your easily-provoked hosts is that even with all those numbers, the Chaika still needs a leisurely 20 seconds to reach 60 mph, wheezy even by 1960 standards.
There is also a one-off, spank-me-hard-red GT version that's shed about 300kg from the standard car's 1840kg and is sleek and low to the ground and shod in a set of racy-looking alloys, but its drool-inducing, 300-odd horse V8 mysteriously vanished in favour of the more tepid base 3.5L unit.
Solid, accurate information on the Tatra T700 and all its variants is beastly hard to get a hold of and usually contradicts half a dozen other 'accurate' sources.
