Civil War Tatting by Virgina Mescher
Tatting, or at least the forerunner of what we know today by that name, was first developed in Europe and in its early stages was called knotting (a series of knots sewn onto a base which created a design).
Modern tatting needles are fairly long and come in a number of different sizes that use different sizes of thread; they also have a long closed eye at one end, whereas a period tatting/netting needle has an open fork at both ends to enable the winding of the thread from end to end.
There is a mention of Melanie using a tatting needle; "She [Melanie] held a line of tatting in her hands and she was driving the shining needle back and forth as furiously as though handling a rapier in a duel." This seems to indicate that she used a netting needle as opposed to a shuttle.

Tatting was traditionally used to make lace for ladies' dresses as well as doilies and other decorative uses.
Tatting is very similar to, and may have developed from, netting, a craft used to create fishing nets and still practised for net repair in fishing communities.
It is believed that tatting may have developed from netting as sailors and fishers would put together motifs for girlfriends and wives at home.

 Needle Tatting (Three Discussions)
For those without regular tatting needles or those just wanting to understand the mechanics of the technique, you may take a plastic drinking straw and poke a hole just large enough to accommodate the yarn you will be using about 1" from the end of the straw.
In needle tatting all rings or "one-shuttle" work, is accomplished by threading the needle with a cut length of thread (length determined by project in hand.) Rings with chains will be worked from a ball of thread of which the end and a certain length is threaded thru the eye of the needle.

 Needle Tatting
The Needle Tatting techniques that produce true tatted rings 'turn' the half hitches onto a 'core' needle before pulling the core thread through; this same technique can be done with a shuttle (clumsily) by 'turning' half hitches in the core thread and passing the shuttle through them.
The first simulated tatting was made by crochet tatting (not to be confused with crochet(ed) tatting; a form of crocheted faux-tatting briefly popular in the first half of the 20th century).
Using a straight-shanked tatting hook, ring hitches were cast on, the base thread pulled through the hitches and the simulated tatted ring secured with a single-crochet.

 What Is Tatting? - Tatting
Tatting is a lace form which consists of circles and curved lines which are created by making knots which slide on a core thread.
For this reason tatting is not like knitting or crochet, both of which are made by pulling loops through and both of which can be undone very easily by removing them from the working tool and pulling on the working yarn or thread.
Tatting is a very pretty lace which can be used for all sorts of purposes ranging from large cloths and doilies to bookmarks and cards.

This tatting shuttle page is created to help shuttle collectors with their questions and to find a few missing links in my research into American tatting shuttles.
If you see a ring on the end of a tatting shuttle it is for a necklace chain, because tatting shuttles were not put on chatelaines.
On tatting shuttles this is usually seen first as small creases in the center of the sides where the posts are attached.

This said, there are some left-handed tatters who do indeed tat with the ring formed on their right hand.

Danaw developed a technique for adding pearls or other beads to her tatting -- not "stitched onto" the tatting at the completion of the piece, but were rather "worked into" it as it was made.

Considering Joins and making Ring to Ring Joins - Tatting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
There are two joins used in simple shuttle and ball tatting which are made in different ways and both of which can confuse the beginner who may not understand why they are used in a particular situation.
The first thing to remember is that joins are made to two specific parts of the tatting; you can join to a picot or you can join to the base of a ring, at the point where the chains meet.
It makes very little difference in the overall appearance of the tatting, but I learned this way of counting the join into the stitches from one of the early Coats leaflets teaching tatting and have found that it works well in most situations.

"Tatting has been the favorite form of fancy work since the 16th Century, and possesses endless possibilities of adaptation.
The shuttles used at that time were exquisitely made in ivory, gold and silver, and one may see in museums the beautiful and costly inlaid shuttles.
The term Tatting is derived from an Indian word "Tattie," which means to make tight or taut,--a sort of half knotted work done with different sized shuttles and many kinds of thread, The French call it "Frivolite" from its delicate and lacy appearance.
