After the death of Philip II, Glaukias, ruler of the Taulanti, joined Kleitus when he rebelled against Alexander the Great in 335 BC.
Glaukias gave Kleitus sanctuary when their effort for independence had been defeated and pursued by Alexander to the mountains of the Taulanti.
In 314 BC, Glaukias was defeated by Cassander, successor of Alexander the Great, who reclaimed possession of Dyrrachium and Apollonia and bound the Illyrian king by treaty not to attack the allies of Macedon.

Illyria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Some archaeologists propose that the Proto-Illyrians settled in what would become Illyria as early as the Early Bronze Age, and presumably soon mingled with the previous non-Indo-European inhabitants.
This mixture would eventually result in the formation of the Illyrian tribes who inhabited Illyria in the Classical period---the Autariatae, Dassaretae, Chelidones, Taulanti, etc.---who were kin to tribes further north, also often classed as Illyrians: the Dalmatae, Pannoni, and others.
The Illyrians produced and traded cattle, horses, agricultural goods, and wares fashioned from locally-mined copper and iron.

Nowadays, the equation of material culture with linguistic and political groups is seen as problematic, as neither the rate of culture change nor of linguistic change is well known.
It was settled by a number of Illyrian tribes---the Autariatae, Dassaretae, Chelidones, Taulanti, etc.---who are considered by scholars to be the Illyrians proper, whereas the many groups to the north---Pannoni, Dalmatae, Liburni, Iapodes---are considered to be distinct from the "true" Illyrians to the south (Wilkes, 1992, et.
Modern nationalist ideologies however tend to minimize the differences and tribal mixing, and often incorrectly refer to all these peoples as "Illyrians".
