The Taung child skull was blasted out of an ancient cave infill during quarry operations at the Buxton limeworks, near the village of Taung.
Most interpretations of the fauna indicate that the Taung environment was a relatively xeric open savannah, in contrast to the growing evidence that early hominids tended to live in more wooded or forested environments.
The relative aridity of Taung was the keystone of the long-held "savannah hypothesis" that hominids became bipedal as an adaptation to savannah environments.

Taung Child - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taung Child refers to the fossil of a skull specimen of Australopithecus africanus.
Taung Child had a cranial capacity of 340 cc, living mainly in a savanna habitat.
This conclusion was reached by noting similarities in the damage to the skull and eye sockets of the Taung Child to the skulls of primates known to have been killed by modern eagles.

The Taung specimen was the first early human fossil found in Africa.
Dart's publication on the "Taung Child," as it was being called, met with immediate criticism from an established community for the most part committed to Piltdown Man.
The position of the foramen magnum, or the hole through which the spinal chord connects with the brain, was positioned well to the front of the skull, an adaptation of a bipedal creature whose head would rest atop the neck in a relatively balanced position.

 Biographies: Raymond Dart
In 1924, Dart learned of a fossil baboon skull that had been found at a nearby limestone quarry at Taung, and asked to be sent any more bones or fossils that were found.
At the time, Piltdown Man was widely accepted as a human ancestor, and Taung, with its apelike skull and humanlike teeth, seemed difficult to reconcile with Piltdown's human skull and apelike jaw.
Dart lived to see the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the Taung child, and died in 1988 at the age of 95.

The Taungs, later known as the Mandalorians, were a warlike Near-Human species with gray skin that controlled the planet Coruscant thousands of years before the rise of Humans.
The Taungs fled to Roon, where they remained for thousands of years, until, under the leadership of the legendary Mandalore the First, the Taungs conquered a world which they renamed in honor of their leader, Mandalore.
The name Taung may be a reference to the Taung Child, a fossil skull which was the first known example of the early hominind Australopithecus africanus.

Who killed the Taung child? - SouthAfrica.info
The Taung child, only three-and-a-half years old, was a member of Australopithecus africanus, a species of bipedal hominid and an early human ancestor.
Professor Lee Berger of Wits University's palaeoanthropology unit announced on Thursday that it was evident from the marks on its skull that a bird of prey similar to the African crown hawk eagle had swooped down and seized the child with its large talons and beak, killing it immediately.
A small skull with a detached lower jaw bone, the Taung specimen was the first hominid to be discovered in Africa.

Taung is situated on the Ghaap Escarpment, a Precambrian cuesta here mantled by a sequence of four stream-laid accumulations of lime tufa, known (from oldest to youngest) as the Thabaseek, Norlim, Oxland and Blue Pool Tufas.
While it was presumed that maximum tufa formation had taken place under wetter than present conditions, recent radiocarbon dating of young tufas at Gorrokop, suggests that tufa growth phases were very largely confined to the transition from arid glacials to more humid interglacials.
Described by Dart in 1925, it was found by quarryman M. de Bruyn during mining operations and came from a reddish clayey flowstone underlying sterile semi-cemented red sand in a cavity c.

Discovered at Taung, South Africa by Raymond Dart in 1924 among two crates of fossiliferous breccia (blocks of sandy sediment and fossils cemented together) from a limestone quarry.
This was because juveniles are often misrepresentative of adult states, and most researchers claimed that the Taung Child would have developed into a chimpanzee or gorilla ancestor.
Also, the Taung Child did not fit the popular preconceived idea that the earliest ancestor of humans would have an ape-like body and a human-like large brain.

The standard line at the time by some of the powerful figures in the field (e.g., A. Keith and O. Abel) was that the ancestors of humans should be found in Europe, and should have an enlarged brain and an apelike jaw (as was the case in the Piltdown Man hoax).
This view was not helped by the difficulty in acquiring casts, the material was distant from many in the field (few of which ever travelled to actually view the material), and most importantly, was that of a juvenile.

The first significant discovery was that of the "Taung child" in 1925.
Found in South Africa, the skull belonged to a child who was at a stage of development of a present-day six year old.
But because the skulls of young humans and young apes are so similar, and because the skull was so different from other found fossils, including the phony Piltdown Man, other scientists ignored the find as well as Dart's interpretation.

In November 1924, a fossilized child's skull was found in a quarry at Taung in the present-day Northwest Province.
Professor Raymond Dart discovered that it had several features that were more human than ape-like: the face was flatter, the head rounder and the brain larger.
Most significantly, in the Taung Child the foramen magnum — the hole in the skull through which the spinal cord passes — was towards the front of the skull, indicating that this creature stood on two legs.

But 10 years ago, Berger and fellow researcher Ron Clarke submitted the theory the hunter was a large predatory bird, based on the fact most of the other fossils found at the same site were small monkeys that showed signs of having been killed by a predatory bird.

When that find was later proved to be a forgery, the Taung fossil took its rightful place as proof that human evolution began in Africa, not Asia.
