The charter is the foundation stone of Taunton's civic history, and is crucial in the history of the Vale as a whole.
Taunton became the centrepiece of one of the richest ecclesiastical estates in Europe, and ownership by the bishops continued until 1822.
To mark the 1100th anniversary of the Charter, a group of people, including representatives from Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council, have formed a Project Group in the hope to celebrate the anniversary with a series of events during May 2004.

 Executive Report
In the Spring a submission setting out the Taunton Chamber perspective on the future development of the town as a business, cultural and educational centre, compiled by members of the Executive Committee, was presented to the newly-formed Vision Commission by our Vice-President.
At the annual general meeting of the Somerset Chamber in September, Executive Committee member and Past President Brian Gibbs was democratically elected to the new Board of Directors as the representative for Taunton Deane town chambers.
In October we were delighted to welcome Taunton Deane Borough Council as a new member and to establish bi-monthly meetings between the two organisations to discuss business issues.

Taunton Deane Morris Men were founded in 1973 and danced out for the first time on July 15th 1974.
The badge at the centre of the baldric was the design of the old assay mark of Taunton (precious metals were assayed in Taunton around 1640 to 1700).
In 1976 we were invited to dance at what was then the Sidmouth International Folk Festival and in September of the same year at a meeting in Chester we were admitted into the Morris Ring of England.
