The only known significant wild population occurs on and around Taunton National Park (Scientific) in central Queensland.
In the mid 1990s, in accordance with the species’ Recovery Plan, the Queensland Government translocated a population of free-ranging bridled nailtail wallabies to Idalia National Park — a location on the extreme western limit of the species historical distribution.
This project will determine the availability of forage and water resources at both Taunton NP and Idalia NP and investigate their capacity to support an increasing abundance of bridled nailtail wallabies.

The species was declared extinct by the 1930s but a small population was rediscovered in central Queensland in 1973 and later protected by the establishment of Taunton National Park.
In 1996, a translocated population was established at Idalia National Park, QLD, on the western edge of the species' former range.
This was a joint project between Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS) and the University of Queensland (UQ), involving intensive monitoring of the translocation for the first 3 years.
