Tauranga (population 90,906 — 2001 census) is the major city of the western Bay of Plenty on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
Tauranga is located at the head of a large harbour which extends along the western Bay of Plenty, and is protected by Matakana Island.
The population increase is due mostly to retirees settling in the city, particularly the suburb of Papamoa, and sun and surf seekers.

The Tauranga Campaign took place in New Zealand, from January 21, 1864 to June 21 1864, during the Maori Wars.
This campaign started as a side show to the Invasion of the Waikato, where British Imperial Troops, on behalf of the New Zealand Colonial Government, were fighting a confederation of Maori tribes known as the King Movement.
In so far as the Tauranga Campaign was a sideshow of the Waikato War it also marks the tacit end of that conflict.

The Tauranga Harbor bridge itself operated as a toll bridge from 1988 to 2001, when a campaign by a populist Toll Action Group began organizing toll violations as part of an anti-toll campaign.
Brian Hodge who is in charge of the project at the city of Tauranga says: "To use the existing law to get the toll would have been a private prosecution process where the cost of the collection vastly outweighed the fine and court costs likely to be awarded so no evaders were taken to court.

The harbour of Tauranga in 1864 was the only port open to Maori to supply the Waikato region and the area around the battle site was itself a source of supply for them.
He first came to New Zealand in 1862 to take charge of the 2nd Taranaki Campaign, and before the Tauranga Campaign where the Battle of Gate Pa was to occur had commanded throughout the Waikato War of 1863-64.
Near the city centre of Tauranga is the original mission house and graveyard of Te Papa where Maori and Europeans who died at the battle are buried.

I think that Brian Nicolle is an excellent campaign manager, although I agree that after the NBR saga he would have had some credibility issues even inside ACT.
It must be quite flattering for Steven Joyce (National's 2005 campaign manager) and John Ansell (National's billboards creator) to be asked to assist with overseas election campaigns - their work for National in 2005 will be copied and used by the LIberals in Australia and other international conservative political groups.
It's a terrible indictment on a party that a campaign in Epsom would suck up so much of the party's resource that electorates beyond Auckland would lose their resourcing - and I presume that to mean people power, not dollars.
