If their first three albums set the Tavares brothers up for success, the fourth, Sky High, (produced by Motown veteran writer/producer Freddie Perren) and its international hits, "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" and "Don’t Take Away the Music," led the group to the "A" list of popular black artists.
Ralph Tavares and I kept in touch over the next few years, during the group's frustrating final years with Capitol and their time with RCA, right through to the time of a difficult decision that Ralph made in 1983.
Perren moved the group to a hotter beat-heavy sound not hinted at in Tavares’ earlier releases and the timing couldn’t have been better, as the disco boom was about to explode.

Back in the day when Tavares, New Bedford's great musical success story, topped the charts with a slew of R&B/pop hits, music writer Ann J. Bishundayal knew she wanted to pen a book about the group.
Tavares stressed that Tavares is not retired, although Ralph and Tiny no longer perform with the group.
Tavares has been working on an album of Cape Verdean songs for his 85-year-old father, and Kiejhay likes to sing along with his grandfather on the song "Papai." He said he relishes these moments and offered advice to other parents.

Born in 1953 Sylvers started his main music career together with his younger brothers and sisters in the family group called "The Sylvers'" that had a couple of great hits in mid and late 70s and were considered to be the west coasts answer to the Jackson five.
In fact Tavares release, that Sylvers' didn't entirely produced was filled with lovely music, all danceable and joyfully presented and one of the better albums that year.
Sylvers also did get a try on the old war-horse in soul music Gladys Knights and the Pips on their album "Vision" which was an expressive and harmonious release.

The hard times, when Ralph held down a full-time mechanics in a aircraft plant and contributed his share of the group's professional earnings to the family kitty, and Tiny attended a trade school in case his singing career failed, are long gone for Tavares.
The Perren-produced Sky High (1976), their fourth album, yielded hits in "Don't Take Away The Music," and in the Gold single "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel." Love Storm, which contained the popular "Whodunnit" and "Goodnight My Love," and The Best Of Tavares followed in quick and chart-storming succession in 1977.
Students of the heredity versus environment debate will find it,difficult to separate the genes from the hearthstone in the case of Ralph, Arthur "Pooch," Antone "Chubby," Feliciano "Butch" Perry Lee "Tiny" Tavares.

The singer Tony Tavares had left the group before the second album was recorded, so it lacks a strong, charismatic lead vocal, what is one of my main reservations, along with a somewhat unfinished feel the album has to it.
The album, though, came packaged in a garishly colourful sleeve with a cosmic eye and pyramid in the centre, sleeve notes praising the drug-induced psychedelic experience, identifying the ‘quest for pure sanity’, and contained ten more chunks of superb rocking psychedelic music.
Apart from being an enjoyable album (although personally I find the three main piano ballads a bit wearing), this is an excellent document of how musical styles were changing at the cusp of a new decade and implying what (commercially) they would soon become.
