From 1983 to 1987 I was Librarian-in-charge of the public library in Tavistock, Devon.
Although Tavistock didn't get anything like a modern public library until this century, there was a library in the town from the days of the Benedictine Abbey.
When I arrived in Tavistock in 1983 I was delighted to discover that "my" library had some relics of William in the form of some early stereoscopic photographs of the area, including the then new Tavistock and South Devon Railway.

 THE HISTORY OF TAVISTOCK
The Abbey was very considerably damaged and burnt in 997 AD by Vikings who had sailed up the River Tamar from what is now Plymouth and had reached as far inland as the Saxon town of Lydford, before turning southwards to Tavistock.
Tavistock has been of long and continuing importance as a market town for West Devon.
The present building housing the Market was provided in 1850 by the 7th Duke of Bedford, who also arranged the construction of the still existing canal from the River Tavy in the centre of Tavistock to the River Tamar, for the purpose of transporting mineral ores especially of copper.

Around the year AD 961 Ordgar the Earl of Devon laid the foundations of a Benedictine Abbey where the centre of the Town now sits.
At the time of the conquest in 1066 Tavistock was firmly established as an ecclesiastic and trading centre.
The Abbey prospered, and in 1116 Henry I gave a Charter as a Market Town, followed in 1281 by Tavistock becoming a Stannary Town entitled to weigh and stamp tin in the Monarch's cause.

The cottages in Dolvin Road are amongst a number of similarly styled cottages which were built in the Tavistock area by the 7th Duke of Bedford to address the serious shortage of housing and gross overcrowding which became a local scandal in the 1840s.
Her surname is not alluded to, and it is highly probable that her name and family would still have remained buried in oblivion had not a bundle of old deeds, in the possession of a collateral descendant, been fortunately unearthed.
Amongst these deeds was a conveyance of a parcel of land in the Parish of Tavistock from John, the son of William Browne, to his son-in-law, John Glanville of Tavistock, the husband of his daughter Thomazine.
