| | Amherst College News Releases: Wako Tawa |
 | | AMHERST, Mass.—Wako Tawa, the William R. Kenan Professor of Asian Languages and Civilizations at Amherst College, has received a grant of ¥ 3,384,795 (~$30,000) from the Shoyu Club in Tokyo to disseminate to high school teachers her “meta-linguistic approach” for teaching Japanese and “step method” for learning the language. |
 | | The Shoyu Club, founded in 1928 to promote Japanese culture through the use of the language overseas, considers Tawa’s unique approach, which she originated at Amherst College, a significant improvement in the task—often considered impossibly difficult for Americans—of acquiring the Japanese language. |
 | | Tawa will use the grant from the Shoyu Club to reconfigure the teaching space for instruction in Japanese at Amherst, providing face-to-face interactions for the students to work together. |
