They enlisted in the army in 1966, and George Clinton (the leader of The Parliaments) recruited Billy Bass Nelson and Eddie Hazel in 1967, then also adding Tawl Ross[?] and Tiki Fulwood.
Due to legal difficulties between Clinton and Revilot[?], The Parliaments' label, the name was abandoned in favor of Funkadelic, which consisted of the same group of people (that is, both the former Parliaments and their back-up band, now both combined in the name "Funkadelic").
In 1972, this new line-up released America Eats Its Young, but many members left the group after that, due to internal squabbles, plus Hazel spending a year in jail for drug possession and assault, Tawl Ross experiencing either a bad LSD trip and/or a speed overdose, while Billy Bass quit due to financial concerns.

With group member Calvin Simon gone off to the war, and with Hazel and Fulwood now in the group, the Parliaments abandoned their uniforms, donned extravagant costumes or street clothes, and began playing increasingly rock-influenced music driven by Hazel's dirty fuzz tone and Hendrix-influenced acid rock approach.
The change to Funkadelic then became official with the introduction of Tawl Ross on rhythm guitar and Bernie Worrel on keyboards, resulting in a series of three landmark albums: the group's self-titled debut (1970), Free Your Mind…and Your Ass Will Follow (1970), and Maggot Brain (1971).
It's no secret that the early Funkadelic lineup suffered through drug problems during this early-'70s era, as first Ross was ousted from the group for his increasing LSD-related unreliability.

Instead of waiting for a settlement, Clinton decided to record the same band under a new name: Funkadelic.
Founded in 1968, the group began life as a smoke screen, claiming as its only members the Parliaments' backing band -- guitarist Eddie Hazel, bassist Billy Nelson, rhythm guitarist Lucius "Tawl" Ross, drummer Ramon "Tiki" Fulwood, and organist Mickey Atkins -- but in truth including Clinton and the rest of the former Parliaments lineup.
Revilot folded not long after, with the label's existing contracts sold to Atlantic; Clinton, however, decided to abandon the Parliaments name rather than record for the major label.

By mid-1967, Clinton had recruited a new backing band, including his old friend Billy "Bass" Nelson (born January 28, 1951, Plainfield, NJ) and guitarist Eddie Hazel (born April 10, 1950, Brooklyn, NY).
After several temporary replacements on drums and keyboards, the addition of rhythm guitarist Lucius "Tawl" Ross (born October 5, 1948, Wagram, NC) and drummer Ramon "Tiki" Fulwood (born May 23, 1944, Philadelphia, PA) completed the lineup.
The Parliaments recorded several hits during 1967, but trouble with the Revilot label backed Clinton into a corner.

RC: Tal (aka 'Tawl') Ross was one of the original Funkadelics, a rhythm guitarist and singer who was responsible for many of the rhythms and chords of the early material.
Under circumstances that are still sort of vague, Tal had a shattering encounter with LSD that made him leave the music scene (and his New Jersey home) altogether.
Be warned that it's not the sort of dance-funk that many Funkateers are used to, nor is it really the sort of super-heavy acid rock funk that appears on the early records.

I can imagine that this type of music was played during the seventies during the wildest parties when drugs were pumping some strange impulses in human bodies.

Funkadelic shows during the early 1970s were also full of the unexpected: four-hour-long jam extravaganzas at ear-shattering volumes, with George Clinton possibly sans clothing.
The early P-Funk line-up included Clinton as lead singer—joined on vocals by nearly everyone else in the band—Billy Nelson on bass, Ray Davis on vocals, Tawl Ross on guitar and Tiki Fulwood on the drums.
Also central to the band were legendary guitarist Eddie Hazel, whose psychedelic guitar work was the centerpiece for the Funkadelic classic “Maggot Brain,” and classically trained musician and producer Bernie Worrell on keyboards, whose arrangements contributed greatly to the band’s unique sound.
