Tawny Pipit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The Tawny Pipit, Anthus campestris, is a medium-large passerine bird which breeds in much of temperate Europe and Asia, and northwest Africa.
It is very similar to Richard's Pipit, but is slightly smaller, has shorter legs and a shorter dark bill.
In south Asia, in winter some care must be taken to distinguish this from other large pipits which winter or are resident in the area, including Richard's Pipit, Blyth's Pipit and Paddyfield Pipit.

Sandgrouse - Long-billed Pipit in Egypt
General coloration closer to Tawny than the richer brown of Richard's Pipit, with a noticeable grey mantle contrasting with the rest of the upperparts and wing-coverts, which were browner.
Given the subsequent sighting, in November, on the Gebel Elba plain, it is probable that Long-billed Pipit is resident in the region, as the species is known to descend to lower elevations in the winter in Sudan (Cave and Macdonald 1953), and the Western Palearctic (Snow and Perrins 1998).
Tawny Pipit is a relatively common passage migrant throughout the country and a scarce winter visitor (Goodman and Meininger 1989).

 Anthus richardi
Richard’s Pipits are so big and leggy that they are really only likely to be confused with that other big pipit, the Tawny Pipit.
However, it is possible to get a Tawny Pipit in autumn which has moulted out of the scalloped juvenile plumage but still has prominent breast streaking and therefore looks superficially like a Richard’s Pipit.
A Richard’s Pipit has a prominent eyestripe and pale lores creating an open-faced, wide-eyed expression whereas Tawny Pipits have dark lores and tend to look as if they are scowling.

After all I had found a ‘Blyth’s-type’ pipit before in Orkney which many agreed with the identification, however when the bird was trapped biometrical data suggested that the bird was in fact a small race Richard’s Pipit (BB 89 p144-146).

Further to last night's posting about there being a Tawny Pipit at Hook Head(Co.Wexford),I decided to go down there today. In the absence of a lift, this involved getting a bus from Cork to Waterford,a lift from there to the river ferry at Passage East and then 2 lifts to get to Hook.
Although it was a juv/1st-w type,it was surprisingly distinctive at rest, and Richard's never really crossed my mind at all.In particular, the dark loral area produced a different head pattern, and the more horizontal stance gave the bird a slight resemblance to a flava wagtail.
I had a similar pursuit of a Tawny at the airfield of St Mary's (Scilly) recently.
