Topic: Tawrat

In the News (Fri 20 Apr 18)

The Tawrat and the Injil are frequently referred to in the Quran.
The Tawrat is mentioned with honour as having been, in its purity, a true revelation from Allah.
Nor is it correct to translate Tawrat as the "Pentateuch", a Greek term meaning the "five books", known as Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

 Are the other books important?
It is commanded by Allah that we believe the Tawrat, Zabur, and Injil, along with all that Allah has revealed.
The Tawrat was revealed first, then the Zabur, and finally the Injil.
The Old Testament division includes the Tawrat of Musa (a:), the Zabur of Dawud (a:), and the books of other prophets such as Hazrat Yusha (Joshua), Samuel, Uzair (Ezra), Sulayman (Solomon), Ayub (Job), Ishaya (Isaiah), Irmiya (Jeremiah), Zul-Kifl (Ezekiel), Yunus (Jonah) and Daniel (a:).

The original Tawrat contained guidance (huda) and light (nur) in order to dispel the darkness of ignorance, in accordance with which the Israelite prophets, who had submitted to Allah (aslamu), gave instructions to the Jews, as did the rabbis and priests who remembered the true wordings of the original book.
It should be noted that although the original Tawrat had been corrupted by the Jews but some important and basic essentials were kept safe in the memory of some of their honest scholars; whereas Allah Himself has taken the responsibility of keeping the Quran in original form without any additions or omissions (Hijr: 9).
Only the prophets and the pious divines who had submitted to Allah, were entrusted with the responsibility of giving judgements according to the Tawrat.

The Injil (the Arabic word for the Christian Gospels) is, according to Islam, one of the three holy books revealed by Allah prior to the Qur'an - the others being the Zabur ( Psalms) and the Tawrat ( Torah).
Together the Tawrat, Zabur, Injil andQur'an make up the revealed books of Islam.
Muslims believe, on the basis of the Qur'an, that humans have corrupted the Injil and Tawrat, and that they are no longeravailable as the word of God as it was revealed, and that only the Qur'an, which God promised that he will protect, is still trueto His original revelation.

The religious dissociation of Abraham and other religious personalities from the main body of Jews and Christians was an inevitable consequence of two strands among Jews and Christians.
In many passages it is stated that the Koran had been sent down 'confirming what was before it', by which was meant the Torah and the Gospel; the contents of the Jewish and Christian scriptures, excepting such falsifications as had been introduced into them, were therefore taken as true and known.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali seems to equate the Tawrat with the Old Testament, "Vaguely we may say that it was the Jewish Scripture." (Ali, The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary, pg.

Glorious Qur’aan informs us that the Tawrat and the Injeel were the word of Allaah, which He revealed to Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus) [PBUT].
Besides this confirming the divine origin of Tawrat was also one of the main mission of Isa (Jesus).
The Tawrat and Injeel were not only partially concealed but both were tempered with, which Jewish and Christians scholars have acknowledged as well.

This is interesting as we have today manuscripts of the Tawrat and Injil that date to BEFORE the time of Muhammed.
By the time this Surah was written, the text of the Tawrat had been around for many centuries, scattered throughout most of the known world in various Jewish communities.
Even if some corrupt Jews did misreport and even corrupt part of the Tawrat for profit, this hardly implies a general corruption of the text throughout all nations where the Jews were dispersed.

To deduce thus a general corruption of the Tawrat among all Jewry and Christendom, for all subsequent ages, from one specific instance of corruption by a small colony of Jews in so remote a place as Madina, as is here assumed for the moment, is hardly a legitimate deduction.

The Quran however endorses the existence and truth of the previous books of the Tawrat (Law of Moses) and the Injil (Gospel of Jesus) included in the Bible and claims that it confirms what is written in them;
“ After those prophets We sent forth Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming the Tawrat already revealed, and gave him the Injil, in which there is guidance and light, corroborating that which was revealed before it in the Tawrat, a guide and an admonition to the righteous.
This theory would seem to question the Quran’s own recommendation for people to consult and judge by the previous Scriptures of the Tawrat and Injil.
