 | | For the duration of the movie, we’re stuck, for better or worse, down in the muck with him, and after spending ninety minutes with him we don’t exactly have a deeper understanding than we had a few minutes in. |
 | | The film is often compared to Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, since both film’s feature a supremely alienated lead who narrates his disgust with society, but Scorsese wrapped his tale up in an ironic wit that provided a bit of release to those in the audience that didn’t sympathize with Travis Bickle. |
 | | The music swells, and the camera pulls away, suggesting there’s a bit of humanity residing in the protagonist, but if we’re to accept this compassionate view, we need to forget the previous hour and a half, which I imagine most people won’t be willing to do. |
