Taxi (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taxi is an American sitcom that originally aired from 1978 to 1982 on ABC, and from 1982 to 1983 on NBC.
The series focused on the every day life of a handful of New York City taxi drivers working for the Sunshine Cab Company, as well as their abusive boss, Louie De Palma, played by actor Danny DeVito.
Taxi was also nominated for 25 Golden Globes, with 4 wins (including 3 for Best TV Series - Musical/Comedy), and in 1979 received the Humanitas Prize in the 30 minute category.

 Taxi (U.S. TV Series, 1978-1983)
As with Taxi, Cheers occasionally used what I refer to as the "small world" technique, whereby people from a character's past show up by accident or at random in the character's place of work (see, for example, Taxi episode 58, Elaine's Old Friend, and Cheers episode 68, The Belles of St. Clete's.
Contrast Taxi's use of customers in storylines with that of shows like Barney Miller and Night Court, where "customers" (people who had been arrested on Barney Miller, litigants on Night Court) were both more common and used to a much larger extent in the shows' storylines.

Taxi was about a group of New York City cabbies, most of whom were trying to make it in other professions, talking about their lives and problems, and dealing with the sardonically hilarious company dispatcher Louie (Danny DeVito) who handed out assignments like a petty dictator.
This was one of the great television ensemble comedies, and many of the actors went on to star in films and other television series.
In Taxi, Tony wore his chucks during the last one or two seasons only and by doing that, he showed how his character grew into a more mature, streetwise guy who continued to have a big heart.

Comedy Central: Movies - Taxi [TV Series] - Plot Summary
A true classic of the "ensemble sitcom" genre, Taxi ran for five years on two different networks, accumulating dozens of industry awards (including several Emmys) and a comparatively small but intensely vocal corps of loyal and loving viewers along the way.
During the series' fourth season, Latka married his countrywoman and sweetheart Simka Dahblitz (Carol Kane), who, beginning in season five, was listed among the regulars.
Debuting September 12, 1978, on ABC, Taxi opened to solid if not spectacular ratings, but its viewership dwindled as the network arbitrarily shifted its time slot (from Tuesday, to Wednesday, to Thursday) over the next four years.

From the melancholy opening notes of the theme song, Taxi promised to be a different kind of sitcom, epitomized by the show's central character, Alex Reiger (Judd Hirsch, Ordinary People): down to earth and compassionate, with neuroses that smacked of real life and not the forced zaniness of too many television shows.
Taxi didn't always maintain a degree of realism--if you haven't seen it in a long time, you may be surprised by some of the cornier jokes and bits of slapstick--but at its best, the show managed to merge sadness and humor into rich and satisfying stories.
Taxi, in my opinion, is one of the best sitcoms of all time.

Trivia: The theme song's full title was "Angela (Theme from 'Taxi')", was written/performed by Bob James and was from his 1978 album "Touchdown".
The title track "Touchdown" was the song Bob had actually written for the theme, but Taxi's producers liked the short cue Bob had written/recorded for one brief scene with Alex (Judd Hirsch) and a young woman, Angela, and used that instead.
