Taxonomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While these are valuable taxonomic tools, they have been used to produce ephemeral results that, on balance, have weakened basic classical taxonomy (Wheeler, 2004).
The field of solving or best-fitting of numerical equations that characterize all measurable quantities of a set of objects is called cluster analysis; this is a form of taxonomy called numerical taxonomy or taximetrics.

Accordingly, a taxonomic perspective should be integrated into policies and programs established at all levels of government to achieve sustainable development and conserve biodiversity.
Several of the major taxonomic institutions, who share a common outlook to the problem, were unable to attend the meeting, including the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the American Museum of Natural History, the Field Museum and the Komarov in St Petersburg.
The taxonomic impediment is a term that describes the gaps of knowledge in our taxonomic system (including knowledge gaps associated with genetic systems), the shortage of trained taxonomists and curators, and the impact these deficiencies have on our ability to manage and use our biological diversity.

Our goals are to provide quality, taxonomic information about all organisms, from terrestrial and aquatic habitats, primarily with a North American focus, but ultimately with a global scope.
We have an automated ability here, which is called "Compare taxonomic nomenclature", which allows you to do that on your own, from the on-line system.
It's that process of moving data from the workbench into the on-line system where the taxonomic serial number is assigned and all the format and data quality verification is accomplished.

Descriptions are the fundamental information units used in the process of constructing classifications and communicating taxonomic concepts.
The quality of stored description data is limited by the lack of a formal model and methodology for composing specimen descriptions, and by the absence of an agreed defined terminology.
Prometheus is developing a novel approach to composing and recording taxonomic descriptions of botanical specimens.

 NODC Taxonomic Code
Up to 1996, while it was in active use, the NODC Taxonomic Code was the largest, most flexible, and widely used of the various coding schemes which adapted the Linnean system of biological nomenclature to modern methods of data storage and retrieval.
Their efforts were specifically oriented toward development of a universally acceptable coding system since, as they succinctly put it, they felt that "everyone [should] use the same code." The VIMS codes contained a maximum of 10 digits, with each two digits representing a different level of the systematic hierarchy.
Version 8.0 of the NODC Taxonomic Code was designed to serve as a bridge to a new system based on a different concept of managing biological data.

The NODC Taxonomic Code is the largest, most flexible and widely used of the various coding schemes developed to adapt the Linnean system of biological nomenclature to modern methods of data storage and retrieval.
Version 8.0 of the NODC Taxonomic Code is designed to serve as a transition to a new system and includes both the older numerical codes (up to 12 digits) as well as new codes that are referred to as Taxonomic Serial Numbers (TSNs).
In the older system taxonomic information was built into the codes through the use of 2-digit couplets to represent one or more levels of the taxonomic hierarchy.

BioNET-INTERNATIONAL, The Global Network for Taxonomy
The First International Conference for the Barcoding of Life attracted an enormous amount of interest, a sign that the use of standardized, short DNA sequences for species identification is now seen by many as an increasingly robust and practical tool for use by identification services and biodiversity researchers.
This, they say, could facilitate taxonomic study in tropical developing nations — where most of the Earth's biodiversity is found — and training of local taxonomists.
DNA Barcodes, described as "a short sequence of DNA enabling discrimination of species within a given compartment of life" are being promoted as a powerful tool to support morphological approaches, one that is capable of providing a revolutionary, rapid and ultimately economic approach to species identifications.

In practice, taxonomic knowledge is complex and remains partially intuitive in many existing ontologies.

Taxonomic identifications are reported by using a standardized list of scientific names that provides nomenclatural consistency and uniformity across study units.

Select a taxonomic group to be analyzed; for example, a group of vertebrates.
For each member of the group, determine some observable traits (characters), and note their "states" (a "character state" is one of two [or more] possible forms of that character).
However, the biggest difference between the two approaches is that, when creating groupings, evolutionary taxonomists seek to maximize the way in which the groupings they create communicate information about the group of organisms in that taxon (in the way the word "mammal" or "reptile" does for even an untrained person).

Retaining, enhancing or creating new taxonomic exhibits can also be expected--keeping in mind that the principal collections display goal will be to simulate a particular forest formation type.
It may be appropriate to add unrelated plants to either old and new taxonomic clusters within the forest formations to visually integrate these displays into their respective formation type (e.g., supplementing the magnolia display with more conifers to better represent a mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest).
There will be room for the addition of a few more specimens at both the north and south ends of the display, although it will be important to maintain a sense of open space in these two areas.
