 Taxus recurvata
This species is recognized by leaf characteristics such as their recurved blades, their crisscross arrangement in spreading from branchlets, appearing strongly convex across the adaxial surface, and showing a sharp contrast in color between the upper and lower surfaces, and by the prismatic seeds that develop on branchlets of the current season.
Taxus baccata differs by paler green leaves that spread from branches with the faces of their blades oriented in the same plane as that of branchlets in which the leaves tend to overlap more than crisscross each other.
This variety is distinguished by the stiff, often straight, branches with erect spreading branchlets and by the olive green leaves that often crisscross more nearer their mid region than base.

Taxus and Taxol - A Compilation of Research Findings, Special Circular 150-99, Preface
Taxus brevifolia is a species of the genus Taxus (commonly named yew).
For ornamental yews, the needles were found to be the primary source of Taxol, whereas the bark was the primary source from the Pacific yew.
The primary source of the taxane, 10-deacetylbaccatin III, was found from renewable biomass (twigs and needles) from the European yew (Taxus baccata) and the Himalayan yew (Taxus wallichiana).

Taxus and Taxol - A Compilation of Research Findings, Special Circular 150-99, A History of Yews in the United States
Introduction of the genus Taxus for ornamental horticulture in the United States appears to have begun with the seedling production work of Theophilus D. Hatfield, when he was the second head gardener at the Hunnewell Estate, Wellesley, Massachusetts (Shugert, 1985).
Hatfield reported that when most Taxus baccata were planted, they would look good for a while, but after a few years of winter injury, they would look disgusting, especially due to browning of the foliage in winter.
Hatfield reported in 1929 that of the original English yews (Taxus baccata) that had been grown at the Hunnewell Estate, only one or two forms were in a presentable condition.

My study increased in its scope in response to present papers at various conferences (e.g., Spjut 1992, 1993, 1998, 2000) for which peer-reviewed papers were solicited and submitted, but have yet to be published, although several have been peer reviewed and accepted.
Nevertheless, Taxus is known from fossils dating to the Oligocene (Kvaček 1986), and there are related extinct genera—Paleotaxus and Marksea—that date back to the Jurassic (Florin 1958, 1963).
In view of this history and phytogeographical data on morphological features of extant Taxus (Spjut 1998, unpublished), the monotypic species concept for Taxus ((Pilger 1903, 1913, 1926) cannot be upheld.
