Topic: Taxus cuspidata

Taxus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taxus is a genus of yews, small coniferous trees or shrubs in the yew family Taxaceae.
The Pacific Yew Taxus brevifolia, native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, and Canada Yew Taxus canadensis are the sources of paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic drug used in breast and lung cancer.
Docetaxel, an analogue of paclitaxel, is derived from the Taxus baccata.

Taxus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Taxus, the yew genus, and namesake of Taxaceae
In North America, 3 species, Taxus is well known for its ornamental tree/shrub species and for the cancer-fighting chemical 'taxol' that can be extracted from tissues (often bark) of the plants.
Taxus brevifolia in the Pacific Northwest was perhaps the most famous for its taxol content, and the harvesting of yew bark came into direct conflict with old-growth preservation and northern spotted owl protection laws.

 Taxus cuspidata
Taxus cuspidata is apparently rare except perhaps in arboreta.
Figure 280 shows one of many cultivars at the Secrest Arboretum in Ohio (Chadwick and Keen 1976) that I recognize as belonging to this species by the leader shoots that ascend upwards, and by the long and undivided thick branchlets that are either pendant or recurved with or without right angled recurved branchlets.
Wilson (1916) commented that he was not sure whether the yew plants he saw in Japan were natural or cultivated, and since Siebold and Zuccarini (1870) noted that yew there occurred in horticulture, and in cultivation around temples, and spontaneously in the mountains, it seems quite possible that the original material came from horticulture.

With leaf and branch characteristics varying on a single cultivar according to the way the plant was oriented to the north, south, east, or west and according to the upper portion vs. the lower portion of a plant, it soon became apparent that the task was impossible.
Hatfield also reported that there were few marks of distinction in the various types of Taxus and that he was really led to believe that all yews are a form of Taxus baccata even though he used the designations Taxus baccata, Taxus cuspidata, and Taxus x media.
Ever since modern Taxus cultivars were first named, nurserymen and plantspeople have made cultivar selections from seedling populations and from designated differences within a nursery field of known Taxus.

Taxus and Taxol - A Compilation of Research Findings, Special Circular 150-99, Genetic Resources for Ornamental Taxus ...
Hatfield died October 7, 1929, as a result of a fall from a ladder while picking seeds of Carolina hemlock; his left leg was badly broken; he sustained serious internal injuries; and tetanus was the immediate cause of death.
It is apparent that the origin and production of Taxus in the United States originated from the collections of Hall, seedling work of T. Hatfield, the Parsons Nursery, and nurserymen like Henry Hicks.
The author's research has not shown any intentional hybridization of Taxus; therefore, the genetic basis for Taxus x media needs to be verified by more genetic analysis.

 Taxus Key
The information on Taxus was extracted from three papers, two of which were peer reviewed in 2001.
Information on Taxus will be edited during the peer review period, and additional photos of herbarium specimens will be presented for all species and varieties.
Nevertheless, Taxus is known from fossils dating to the Oligocene (Kvaček 1986), and there are related extinct genera—Paleotaxus and Marksea—that date back to the Jurassic (Florin 1958, 1963).

 Yew
Taxus baccata is also known as 'the English Yew'.
The name 'taxus' may be related to the Greek 'toxon' (bow) and 'toxicon' (the poison with which the arrowheads were dressed).
A tincture is made of the fresh leaves, diluted and shaken (succussed) many times until the appropriate potency has been achieved, and used, for example, to treat gout and rheumatism, arthritis, urinary tract infections and heart and liver conditions.
