The bridge was designed by William A Fairhurst and construction began in March 1963 with the infilling of West Graving Dock, King William Dock and Earl Grey docks in Dundee.
The bridge was originally a bidirectional toll road with the original 1966 toll for motorcycles, cars and goods vehicles of 1/-, 2/6 and 10/-, respectively.

Fife councillor Mike Rumney, the vice-chairman of the Tay bridge board, suggested this week that he had heard rumours that charges on the Tay Road Bridge could be abolished while those on the Forth Road Bridge would remain in place, a situation he described as shocking.
He would not be overly disappointed if the scenario of scrapping tolls on the Tay bridge but not on the Forth turned out to be true, and he would not stand in the way of any such proposal.

Many years ago there used to be an observation platform in the middle of the bridge.
As a young schoolboy I cycled over on the vehicle road with a mate and on reaching the platform we decided we had had to go up and look at the scene.
We were able to watch a police car with it's lights flashing come onto the bridge, speed along the road and screech to a halt below us.

AN ATTEMPT to have tolls on the Tay Road Bridge scrapped was voted down 63-48 by MSPs yesterday.
Tavish Scott, the transport minister, said removing the Tay charges would increase traffic in Dundee, but the SNP said the only congestion was caused by traffic queuing at the toll booths, which evaporated when staff went on strike on Tuesday.
After a review, Mr Scott said this month that tolls on the Erskine Bridge would be removed because its costs had been paid off - unlike the Tay bridge's - and it would ease congestion in Glasgow.
