The Taycheedah Indians were long remembered by the early traders and settlers because of their friendly attitude and their willingness to assist the newcomers when other Indian bands became unruly.
Among the early settlers of Taycheedah village, few had the advantages of birth, culture, and education to such a degree as did Colonel S. Beall and his talented wife whose maiden name was Elizabeth Fenimore Cooper.
Colonel Beall was a native of Maryland and a direct descendant of the Randolphs of Virginia, the Carrolls of Carrollton, Maryland, and the Singletons of South Carolina.

 Taycheedah Correctional Institution
Taycheedah Correctional Institution is a maximum and medium security facility entrusted with the custody and supervision of the State's incarcerated female offenders.
Taycheedah's history began in the early 1800's, when Governor James Doty established a home in Fond du Lac, which to this day stands on the institution grounds.
In the early 1850's, female offenders were housed in the Wisconsin State Prison, known today as Waupun Correctional Institution.

During the summer of 1838, G. Knapp entered land in the timber, further north, which was the first settlement in that part of the town, and might he called the first in what is now Taycheedah.
They were at first mostly from New York, Ohio and New England, and Taycheedah once could claim more than half of the aristocracy, culture and honorable men of the entire county.
It was, also, the first Wisconsin village to send steamboats up the Wolf River and carry on, in those afterward famous timber regions, the business of lumbering.

The lawsuit, filed by four women prisoners at Taycheedah Correctional Institution, the ACLU’s National Prison Project and the ACLU of Wisconsin, asks the court to order reforms to the system so that constitutionally adequate care is made available.
Unlike the women at Taycheedah, men with severe mental health issues may be assigned to the Wisconsin Resource Center, an inpatient psychiatric facility that provides round-the-clock care and individualized treatment for male offenders.
One of the plaintiffs, Debbie Ann Ramos, was not seen by a gynecologist for seven years after arriving at Taycheedah, despite a diagnosis of chronic endometriosis and progressively worsening vaginal bleeding.

When a female inmate at Wisconsin's Taycheedah Correctional Institution died last February gasping for air on the dining room floor in an acute attack of asthma that prison nurses ignored, the question arose whether the negligence was an isolated incident or part of a hidden pattern.
Its three-part series by staff reporters Mary Zahn and Jessica McBride (October 22-24) documented case after case of dubious decisions made by questionable personnel while gravely ill inmates, in the throes of heart attack or appendicitis, asthma or internal bleeding, kidney disease or lung cancer, pleaded futilely for help.
While noting the inadequacies in staffing, training, and communication that have conspired to endanger inmates, the series was unrestrained in criticizing both the shoddiness and the secrecy of official inquiries into such deaths.
