Planet of the Apes (1968)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
He may find the most terrifying one of all on the planet where apes are the rulers and man the beast.
An astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved.
"'Planet of the Apes' is a very entertaining movie, and you'd better go see it quickly, before your friends take the edge off it by telling you all about it.

Planet Of The Apes Original Film Summary
Planet of the Apes:  the original motion picture starring Charleton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, and Linda Harrison.
The interactions between man and ape in the film were reflective of many of the social and governmental issues of the sixties:  the burgeoning animal rights movement, nuclear war, creationism vs evolution, classism, racism, and equal rights.  If one looks closely, there are many others, as well.
In contrast to Tim Burton's 2001 version of Planet of the Apes, which had better sheer entertainment value, the original Apes movie had a more defined contrast between ape and man.  Perhaps it was a mistake to have thinking, talking, blatantly problem-solving humans in the Burton remake.

Planet of the Apes (2001): Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans - PopMatters Film Review
Taylor surmises they've gone 320 light years off course and has himself a good laugh as he watches one of his crew plant a U.S. flag, fully aware of the futility of the gesture and enjoying it.
Taylor bombastically exclaims, "It's a madhouse!" as he is hosed down while he's imprisoned, it doesn't come off as the inadvertent comedy that it may have in another film.
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) follows their son Caesar's (also played by Roddy McDowall) rise to power, and the final film, 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes, shows the events that eventually led to the simian society, bringing the series, in effect, full circle.

Taylor, Brent, and Nova attempt to escape when Nova is shot dead by one of the apes, who have invaded the underground city.
The initial plan was to kill off Taylor early in the film; the producers chose instead to have Heston's cameo broken into bookended opening and closing sequences in the film, including giving him the key moment of the conclusion.

Stomp Tokyo Video Reviews - Planet of the Apes
Because Planet of the Apes was written by Rod Serling, we are subjected to long scenes of sweaty men hiking through a desert discussing philosophy and the baser portions of human nature.
The film follows Taylor, Zira, and her archaeologist fiance' Cornelius (Roddy McDowall) as they escape from the ape city and then find clues about the mystery of the Planet of the Apes.
While not the most entertaining of the Planet of the Apes series (that honor would probably go to Escape from the Planet of the Apes), the original film is certainly the most important film in the series, both for its thought-provoking premise and stage-setting qualities.

Fortunately, Taylor is befriended by Nova (Linda Harrison, seen more recently in "Cocoon"), a mute but fetching human woman, and catches the attention of chimpanzee scientist Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter) and her archeologist fiancé Cornelius (the late Roddy McDowall).
It is here that the "Planet of the Apes" makes its earth-shattering and sobering revelation-- Taylor finds the upper half of the Statue of Liberty on a deserted beach, proof that he had returned to Earth and the 'upside-down' world he found was a result of man's own folly.
All in all, "Planet of the Apes" was a cinematic statement of the times, reflecting the climate of instability and discord of the late Sixties.

PLANET OF THE APES depicts an upside-down world - a brutal, primal place where apes are in charge and humans scavenge for subsistence, hunted and enslaved by the tyrannical primates.
The 2001 Planet of the Apes is addressing an audience that is largely post-Enlightenment, meaning many of us are open to the supernatural because it's obvious to us that rationality did not make the world a better place.

As cheesy as the original Planet of the Apes film is, it sets a pretty high cinematic bar.
Apes is a rare remake that is shorter than its predecessor, and one that doesn't cast actors from the original...because most of them are dead (aside from Charlton Heston, who is dead only between his ears, and makes a brief appearance here).
Like the first film, there are humans on the planet, but they can talk and have more interaction with their monkey overlords, who act a lot more simian than they did in the original.

I must point out that the apes do not believe in "catch and release" and instead subscribe to "catch and lobotomize." The logic behind this is pretty foggy, much like deciding to stick a fork in someone's brain because they are too stupid.
"Planet of the Apes" is a favorite of mine, mainly due to its premise, but the little quirks here and there endear it to me. Charlton Heston, patron saint of all gun owners, grabbing a rifle so that no ape can ever put a collar on him again is among these.
