Fulton returned to New York later in 1803 to continue developing his designs, conscious of the fact that his partner's monopoly was contingent on their development of a boat that could travel at least four miles per hour.
Fulton believed the acceptance of the concept of total freedom of the seas would allow the nations of the world to disarm and to concentrate their wealth on social expenditures for the betterment of humankind.
Robert Fulton is interred in the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery in Manhattan, New York.
