Te Awamutu is a town in the Waikato on the North Island of New Zealand.
Te Awamutu is located some 30 km south of Hamilton on State Highway 3, one of the two main routes south from Auckland and Hamilton.
Te Awamutu was a major site during the Maori wars of the 19th century, serving as a garrison town for the colonial settlers.

Te Awamutu's population today is estimated at 8,500 with almost 2,000 people living in Kihikihi.
From that time the settlement was known as Te Awamutu meaning "end of the river." Visitors to the town's famed rose gardens cross Gorst Avenue to Selwyn Park (the site of the mission), then view historic St. Johns church - the third church built by the Otawhao mission in 1854, and still in use today.
Ngaroto is a peat lake which serves the Te Awamutu area as both a recreational area and a natural marsh wildlife sanctuary.

 Early History of Te Awamutu
At Te Awamutu were two important Pa. Otawhao, a pa on the hill which is currently Wallace Terrace and Kaipaka Pa which is to be found at the end of what is now Christie Avenue.
In March 1863 Ngati Maniapoto seized the government press and only after negotiation returned it onto the Queen's land at Te Ia. The seizure was one of many factors which led to the expulsion of Europeans from Te Awamutu and districts and the outbreak of the Waikato Wars (1863-1865).
Te Awamutu has taken the rose as a symbol, and is the self-proclaimed Rose Capital of New Zealand.

Te Awamutu gradually clawed their way back and at times had the Fraser Tech defence stretched until a penalty corner awarded to Te Awamutu was slammed into the goal by Betty Dellaway.
Te Awamutu came back and looked like breaking the deadlock when Sue Hill broke into the circle only to find a tight knit defence, who were able to clear and set up an attack, which resulted in a Tech penalty corner which Matthews converted to regain the lead for her team.
Te Awamutu tried to come back, but Tech were in control at this stage and it was the favourites who had the final say when Hutchinson scored to seal the game.

 The Kiwanis Club of Te Awamutu - Other Projects
The building of the Te Awamutu skateboard park was an excellent example of cooperation between service clubs, local government and the community.
The park was conceived by the local skateboarders and their parents, championed by Kiwanis Past President Ian Kay, funding and construction managed by an ad hoc board with representatives from Kiwanis, Lions, the Community Board, the District Council and the skateboarders themselves.
In 1999, in cooperation with the Kiwanis Club of Montville Township, New Jersey, USA, the Kiwanis Club of Te Awamutu was able to gift a bright wall mural to the hospital to brighten the lives of staff and patients there.
