INKPOT#84 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: RUTTER Te Deum and other church music. Cambridge Singers/City of London ...
The opening track, the eponymous Te Deum, is Rutter's choral rendition of a 5th century ecclesiastical thanksgiving canticle originally in vulgate Latin (whose opening exhortation "Te Deum laudamus" translates to "We praise thee, O God").
He includes the text of the Te Deum in its entirety, albeit in English, lasting an economical (as classical Te Deums go) seven minutes and a quarter, replete with clashes of cymbals, rolling of timpani and blasts of brassy chords to accentuate the joyfulness of worship.
In addition to the Te Deum (and accoutrements), he has also written settings of the Requiem (Collegium COLCD 103), Gloria (COLCD 100), Magnificat (COLCD 114), as well as cantatas, anthems and carols, a veritable trove of delights for those who have been won over to the consummate musical qualities of this composer-conductor.

These critical appreciations are thought applicable to the style of the Te Deum, which depends for its effect mostly on the nobility of the theme and the simplicity and directness of the expression.
Cyprian and the "munerari" of the oldest texts of the Te Deum are a mere coincidence; but the rest of the similar passages cannot be an accident.
In general, the Te Deum may be said to follow the same rubric as the Gloria in excelsis at Mass.

A Te Deum was often commisioned to celebrate events in the royal court such as noble births, weddings, the arrival of special guests, or military victories.
The second Te Deum was first performed in September of 1802 in Eisenstadt in conjunction with a visit there from Lord Horatio Nelson, a British military hero famous for a naval victory in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars.
Te Deum is scored for flute, two oboes, bassoon, two horns, three trumpets, two trombones, bass trombone, timpani, violins, viola, mixed chorus, and continuo.

 Te Deum
The Te Deum form is a Latin liturgical piece which developed from a chant; its roots may be as early as 350 A.D. It may have started as part of a Mass for the Easter Vigil.
Dvorak is said to have been particularly moved by the text, Te ergo quaesumus, tuis famulis subveni, quos pretioso sanguine redimisti [Therefore, we pray you to aid your servants, whom by precious blood you redeemed], repeated by the chorus in the second movement in response to the soloist.
Bruckner’s Te Deum (1881), which the Chorus performed in 1986, is an expansive, operatic, almost bombastic setting, to which this version stands in fine counterpoint.

Still, the Te Deum H. is a wonderfully confident example of Charpentier’s style.
From the opening notes of the ‘Te Deum’, the virtues of this performance are apparent; a lively tempo, crisp, stylish playing with the chorus singing distinct good French pronunciation of the Latin.

Music of Hector Berlioz: Te deum
The Te deum is one of the last of Berlioz’s major “architectural” works, composed in 1848–49, in which massed instrumental and vocal forces are deployed by the composer like an army in order to exploit alternately colossal and intimate sonorities in a vast, spacious acoustic.
Fortunately the Te deum eventually did get its first performance on April 30, 1855, conducted by Berlioz; the occasion was the opening of the new organ in the church of St-Eustache.
The saxhorn is heard prominently as a solo instrument at bar 52, where the opening choral entry of the Te Deum laudamus is quoted; shortly after the descending scale is heard with the entry of the pipe organ.

 Haydn's Te Deum
The Te Deum was composed around 1799, but its first recorded performance was not until 1800 at Eisenstadt, the home of the Esterhazy family, to celebrate Lord Nelson's (and, inevitably, Lady Hamilton's) arrival there.
The Te Deum is a choral work throughout, without the solo sections that are heard in Haydn's masses and other sacred works.
The Adagio at Te ergo quaesumus opens with a thunderous unison C and proceeds, mysteriously, in C minor with the harmonies moving chromatically to stunning, if brief, effect.

 Te Deum
We know little of the circumstances that led Berlioz to undertake his Te Deum: there was no commission (as there had been for the Requiem), no literary thunderstroke (as for the Fantastique), nothing to commemorate (in the way the Symphonie funèbre et triomphale commemorated the Trois Glorieuses).
The first movement, Te Deum laudaumus, is an extended fugue whose subject is shaped from the bold descending unisons "proposed," as Berlioz put it, by the organ at the beginning.
The tenor aria, Te ergo quaesumus, embraces one of Berlioz's favorite devices, the chanted choral ostinato ("fiat super nos")—quite similar in conception to the Offertoire of the Requiem, to Juliette's funeral procession, and for that matter to the "Marche des pèlerins" in Harold en Italie.

The Te Deum, while often in a minor tonality and sometimes imposing, has a suitable extroverted quality; the Magnificat, with its hushed intensity, does seem solemn, but its cadences are striking, typically resolving from a tonal chord to a shimmering major-second dissonance.
The eponymous piece, "Te Deum" itself, is the longest and is by turns warm and chilling; Part seems to be projecting a love and fear of God all at once.
Te Deum contains a sublime mix of choral solemnity and orchestral majesty, effortlessly shifting between moments of barely audible intimacy and invigorating crescendos without sounding the least bit contrived or pompous.

 Berlioz: Te Deum (DE 3200)
A century-and-a-half later Berlioz's Te Deum stands as one of the ultimate ceremonial pieces of all time, and it is still an event whenever the work is performed today.
This shouldn't be surprising; after all, the forces he called for in the score are positively immense: two large adult choruses, a third chorus of children, a tenor soloist, a large symphony orchestra, and an important solo part for a great pipe organ placed at a long distance from the ensemble.
It is so vast, in fact, that a fortissimo orchestra or organ chord will reverberate in the cathedral for several seconds, even when the cathedral is packed with thousands and thousands of people, as it was the night of the concert.

An abbreviated title commonly given both to the original Latin text and the translations of a hymn in rhythmical prose, of which the opening words, Te Deum laudamus, formed its earliest known title (namely in the Rule of Saint Caesarius for monks, written probably when he was Abbot of Lérins, before AD 502).
Their "internal evidence proves that Nicetas felt the need of such a hymn as the Te Deum, and, so to speak, lived in the same sphere of religious thought" (Burn, cii), while parallel passages from his writings (given by Burn, ciii-civ), although offering no direct quotation, exhibit similarity of thought and diction.
(a) If the Te Deum were composed in the latter years of the fourth century, it would be a unique exception to the hymnology of that time, which was all fashioned in the regular strophic and metric manner introduced and popularized by Saint Ambrose.

The general rubrics (titulus XXXI) of the Roman Breviary direct the recitation of the Te Deum at the end of Matins:
The choir and congregation sing the hymn standing, even when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, but kneel during the verse "Te ergo quaesumus..." At the end the versicles "Benedicamus Patrem..." are added, followed by the single prayer "Deus cujus misericordiae."
One interesting feature of the latter is that it borrows inspiration for ten of its numbers from a Te Deum composed by the Minorite Francesco Urio, and able Milanese composer of the seventeenth/eighteenth century.
