Te Kuiti is situated on the floor of the valley of the Mangaokewa Stream, a west-bank tributary of the Waipa River, and about 2 miles north of the entrance to the Mangaokewa Gorge.
Te Kuiti is the centre of an extensive district.
Te Kooti fled to the Mangaokewa Valley in 1872 for sanctuary with the Ngati Maniapoto.

Te Rongopamamao had an English father, and her mother, Ingoingo (also known as Makereta Pepene Poharama), belonged to Ngati Kinohaku, a hapu of Ngati Maniapoto.
She was represented in exhibitions at Te Taumata Art Gallery in Auckland and, in 1994, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Nevertheless, at the time of her death at Te Kuiti on 14 June 1995, she was survived by over 100 direct descendants.

A Te Kuiti woman who gave birth to her third child just six weeks ago has died and police say her death is suspicious because of her age - even though there were no signs of violence.
Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken of Te Kuiti police said the death was also regarded as suspicious because the woman had been in good health.
Family, including the dead woman's parents, had yet to arrive in Te Kuiti and her name would not be released until later today, police said.

Te Mahuki, also known as Te Manukura, was born at Te Kumi, north of Te Kuiti, probably in the 1840s.
Te Mahuki and his followers tried several times to make a symbolic return to Parihaka but were turned back at Pukearuhe by the constabulary.
For this and other 'fanatical actions' Te Mahuki was again arrested, and he served a term of 12 months' imprisonment at Auckland.

This first record of Te Kuiti Group in the central Auckland area comprises erosionally truncated Glen Massey Formation beneath the Waitemata Group, a complete section through Mangakotuku Formation, and an incomplete Waikato Coal Measures section.
Six Te Kuiti Group samples examined for palynomorphs and foraminifers gave ages ranging from Runangan to early Whaingaroan and show a transition from a predominantly terrestrial late Eocene environment to a shallow marine setting in the early Oligocene.
This result helps substantiate previous inferences about the continuity of Te Kuiti Group deposition between Northland and Waikato, and supports the suggestion that the southern limit to the Northland Allochthon lies north of Auckland.

We say goodbye to Pauline and Len, and spend a good 6 hours driving south, through Auckland towards Te Kuiti, including a stop off at the Kiwi House in Otorohanga: this has an excellent Kiwi exhibition, including two Kiwis in a "night house" which is "dark" during daytime.
In Te Kuiti we meet up with Bill's cousin Kate and her husband John and have dinner at their farm just out of Te Kuiti.
Then we went to the Waipoua Forest, and walked to the Four Sisters, Te Matua Ngahere (The Father of the Forests: over 5 metres in diameter and could be over 2000 years old) and Tane Mahuta (God of the Forests: the largest tree in NZ, and approx 1200-2000 years and 51 metres tall).
