Te Tawharau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Te Tawharau (roughly translated as "the shelter") is a Maori political party in New Zealand.
Te Tawharau was founded on the principles espoused by Te Haahi Ringatu (the Ringatu Church) and sought to persuade the Maori people to recognise that under the new MMP voting system it was possible for Maori to hold the balance of power if Maori was able to unite under a common umbrella.
While Te Tawharau has not formally been absorbed into the new Maori Party, as Te Tawharau has lapsed as a political organisation, the elements and people behind Te Tawharau are now supporting the Maori Party.

Rickard, believing that an independent Maori party was needed, founded Mana Maori in 1993.
Mana Maori was the largest wholely-Maori party contesting the New Zealand general election 2002, and incorporated the smaller Te Tawharau and Piri Wiri Tua parties, but did not win any seats.
The emergence of the new Maori Party, founded by sitting MP Tariana Turia, prompted the transfer of support from Mana Maori, and the party was officially deregistered in 2005.

However, I have been approached by Te Tawharau who also believe strongly in the need for a Waka Maori, for a coalition of Maori in Parliament.
Te Tawharau was the first Maori party to be registered for the MMP environment, they are the first to sign up wholeheartedly to the Waka Maori concept, and they were born from within Mataatua and Te Arawa.
I have decided that the campaign to bring our people on board the Waka Maori would be best served by accepting the offer to stand as a candidate in the new seat of Waiariki for Te Tawharau.

Henare, Morgan, and Waitai were previously members of the so-called "tight five", New Zealand First's group of Maori MPs.
(The other two members of the "tight five", Tu Wyllie and Tuariki Delamere, were not involved with Mauri Pacific - Wyllie had remained with New Zealand First, and Delamere eventually joined the small Te Tawharau party.) Because it was led by these three MPs, Mauri Pacific was considered by many to be a Maori party.
Its policies were generally favourable towards Maori, such as its proposal to give customary Maori law equal status to modern Western law, but the party portrayed this as multiculturalism rather than merely Maori advocacy.
