Danny Thompson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Danny Thompson's initial experience of bass playing was with a Skiffle group, with whom he played a teachest bass.
In the early 1960s he bought a second-hand double bass from an old man in Battersea who let him have the instrument for £5 (despite the fact that it was worth much more than that), on the basis of his keenness to play it.
The bass was built by the Gand, a French luthier, in 1865.

Tea-Chest Bass Questionnaire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
This questionnaire is designed specifically for players of the tea-chest bass (or bush bass, as it's known down under.) Of course there are many such things which are not strictly speaking made with tea chests.
Let's just say that if your bass uses a rectangular wooden box, this is the survey for you, and if it uses a round metal tub, then you should do the Washtub Bass Players Survey instead.
Your responses will (someday) be summarized in a new section of the Washtub Bass Page devoted to the tea-chest bass, and also be forwarded to Jim Uticone, who is currently at work on a book about the Washtub Bass and its kin and cousins around the world.

 THE WASHTUB BASS PAGE
We're not narrow-minded (washtub bass people can't afford to be), so our scope includes the tea-chest bass, the gas-tank bass and the like, and even the occasional cigarbox guitar or fiddle.
An unusual feature of the typical (i.e., direct) washtub bass design is that the string vibrations pull, rather than push, the surface of the sound chamber.
I'm not ready to endorse the opinion of some, that Richmond was the greatest of all washtub bass players, but he was absolutely a master of the three bass essentials: delivering the beat, playing in tune, and supporting the style of the music.

Ever since the teachest bass and washboard days of skiffle, when the new generation found a voice to express themselves with, laying the foundations of everything that followed after, from rock'n'roll to folk, we have been trying to recreate that sense of community in a society that is literally flying apart at the seams.
As I pointed out in a somewhat controversial article in Folk Review (controversial, that is, coming from such a well-known red as me), the folk tradition is basically conservative, harking back to recollections of times before the industrial revolution destroyed what Karl Marx called the rural idiocy of village life.
