According to NC State University's Guidelines for the Utilization of Graduate Teaching Assistants (12/16/93), all International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) who are to have significant verbal interaction with students in a classroom or laboratory must be screened for English proficiency before they are permitted to assume these responsibilities for the first time.
Students who have not been cleared for the desired level of teaching responsibilities as a result of the SPEAK test or the interview after completing the required course(s) may be re-screened after they have worked on their English proficiency (via additional FLE courses, tutoring, or instructional software available through the Language Technology Lab).
During their first semester of teaching, ITAs should be provided with instructional and language support by FLE teachers, instructional development specialists, and/or the student's department.
