The Lotus 25 was the first monocoque chassis in F1, the 49 was the first car of note to use the engine as a stressed member and the 72 broke new ground in aerodynamics.
Chapman was also an innovator as a team boss and it was Team Lotus which first introduced commercial sponsorship to F1 at Monaco in 1968.
Former Team Lotus employees Peter Collins and Peter Wright organized a deal to take over the team from the Chapman Family and in December the new Team Lotus was launched with Mika Hakkinen and Julian Bailey being signed for the 1991 season.

Lotus introduced the dominant Ford-Cosworth DFV engine to F1 in 1968 and built a new car for it, the Type 49.
Jochen Rindt was replaced in the team by a young Brazilian named Emerson Fittipaldi who rose to the challenge magnificently and won the penultimate race of the year in USA to clinch world titles for both Jochen Rindt and Team Lotus.
The team shipped a spare as quickly as possible and Fittipaldi was left with only one car for qualifying and the race while his teammate had to skip Monza.

The team are one of the most famous names in motor racing and have won seven constructors and six drivers world championships since their founding by the late Colin Chapman.
Team Lotus have the nucleus of what was the F1 racing team at their base in Wymondham and have made tentative plans to get back into Formula 1 in 1999.
Lotus, who left F1 at the end of 1994, were being linked with the possible empty 12th spot on the list of competing constructors now that Honda (since the death of Harvey Postlethwaite) will not, after all, be entering a team next year and will instead just be supplying engines to BAR and Jordan.

I felt this when I bought the team and I am determined to do all I can.' Hunt searched for a sponsor but was unable to secure one, and with no money to build the new car, the team was forced to close it's doors on January 17th, 1995, and the staff made redundant.
Hunt said 'this is an extremely sad day for everybody associated with Team Lotus, the staff have been extraordinarily loyal and patient, but the non-payment of funds due meant that we had no option.' But that is not the end of the Lotus marque in Formula One.
According to Pacific team owner, Keith Wiggins, the arrangement was 'exciting, not only for us but for F1 in general.' Strange really, because all the deal really meant was that the 1995 Pacific had a green stripe painted down the side with a Lotus logo on the nosecone.

Lotus enjoyed success with the Austrian Jochen Rindt as number 1 driver but tragedy struck again when Rindt who had a clear lead in the Drivers Points Championship, was killed in an accident at the Monza circuit However, Rindt's lead in the 1970 Drivers Championship was sufficient for him to become the Drivers Champion posthumously.
Team Lotus's final grand Prix was Australia 1994 at which point the financial crisis finally closed the team.
