		Beginning in 1992, McLaren's position of dominance began to be eroded by the ascendant Renault-powered Williams, a drop in form that was compounded by the departure of Honda from Formula One at the end of that season.
		The team began the 2004 Formula One season with the MP4-19, which technical director Adrian Newey described as a "debugged version of the MP4-18." This proved to be anything but the case, and a new car was required by mid-season.
		The team was positive about it's chances in the upcoming championship after the performances in the latter half of 2005, and the news of reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso joining the team for 2007 would have done alot to lift spirits within the camp.
