		The ancient Teanum Sidicinum (there is a Teanum Apulum, q.v., in Apulia) was the capital of the Oscan tribe of the Sidicini which drove the Aurunci from Rocca Monfina.
		Like Cales, Teanum continued to have the right of coinage, and, like Suessa and Cales, remained faithful to Rome in both the Hannibalic and the Social wars.

		Ai tempi dell'Impero Romano nei pressi di San Paolo sorgeva la fiorente città detta Teanum Apulum, importante sentinella romana e porta d'ingresso in Puglia.
		Nei giardini pubblici della città si erge una colonna che ricorda ancora oggi lo storico avvenimento della vittoria riportata sul Metauro dall'esercito romano che, guidato dal console Nerone partito proprio da Teanum Apulum, ebbe la meglio sull'esercito cartaginese di Asdrubale.
		L'importanza di San Paolo Civitate si deve anche ad una celebre battaglia che l'ha vista protagonista il 18 giugno 1053: tale conflitto, come ricordano numerosi documenti rinvenuti in seguito ad appositi studi, segnò una svolta decisiva nella storia dell'Italia meridionale, poiché in tale occasione i Normanni fecero prigioniero il Papa Leone IX.

		History: Troy is an ancient town whose legendary origins go back to the 10th century BC, when - according to Roman historian Servius - the mythical Greek hero Diomedes returning from Troy in Asia Minor stopped in southern Italy and founded Aequum Tuticum (near Ariano Irpino), Maleventum (present Benevento) and Troia.
		Under the Romans the town was called Aecae and had strong ties with nearby Herdoniae (Ordona), Ausculum (Ascoli Satriano), Arpi (Foggia), Teanum Apulum (San Paolo di Civitate).
		For long centuries was probably abandoned, then in 1010 a medieval settlement rose on the ruins of the ancient town.

		Le mura si adattavano al profilo orografico con un disegno irregolare, racchiudendo non solo l’abitato, ma tutta l’area vitale per la città.
		La muraglia difensiva era interrotta da quattro porte, con a nord la Porta Sacra, (dal nome della collina omonima), sulla via per Teanum Apulum; a sud la Porta Ecana, rivolta verso Aecae (Troia); a sud-est la Porta Arga, verso Arpi e a nord-ovest la Porta Albana, fra le colline del Belvedere e del monte Albano.
		Abbattute queste nell’ anno 663 a seguito della distruzione bizantina, alla fine del VII secolo, con la ricostruzione longobarda le nuove mura, restringono di molto il perimetro cittadino, formano un tracciato più regolare e aderente all’effettivo sviluppo dell’abitato.
