Love Will Tear Us Apart : review by Shelly Kraicer
Love Will Tear Us Apart is his first feature, supported by a grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and by prominent producers Stanley Kwan and Tony Leung Kar-fai (it stars the latter).
If I had to fix Love Will Tear Us Apart on the Chinese film-making map, it would be somewhere between Fruit Chan's romantic meditations on post-1997 HK (for theme) and Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang's essays on urban anomie (for style).
Jean-Michel Frodon in Le Monde has described Love Will Tear Us Apart as an essay at synthesizing HK and mainland film, which is apt, I think.Hong Kong cinema has been looking outwards, towards the mainland, with a mixture of dread, anticipation, excitement, and denial since the early '80s.

They threw down their defences and pursued love with an ardour that had eluded previous policy shifts like the metric system and the gun registry.

Underpinned by one of the great bass-lines of post punk, Love will tear us apart is a fitting tribute to the tortured genius of a cruelly underestimated existential poet.
In the song, the lines "Love has torn us apart" are constantly repeated and the last line in the song is "We're falling apart together".

It is probably impossible that you haven't heard the indie disco classic "Love will tear us apart".
This month marks the twentieth anniversary of the suicide of Ian Curtis, lead singer and lyricist of Joy Division, the group who are beautifully responsible for the previously mentioned classic 'Love will Tear us Apart'.
Some people will say that it reflected the life of a man living in a cold and unloving world but it was a stronger, more universal experience than that.

Love will tear us apart When routine bites hard and ambitions are low.
The following month, Love Will Tear Us Apart was released, the song that was to be the band's most successful work.
Joy Division's dark, atmospheric sound would be echoed in the work of such acts as the Cure, Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen, and more recently Nine Inch Nails, not to mention the countless gothic bands that have tried to imitate Joy Division's pounding drums, dreamy guitar, and Ian Curtis' distant vocal style.

Love Will Tear Us Apart, the song that the band will always be associated with is a portrait of love and connection endlessly turning in on itself to destruction.
This was quickly realised with the epileptic frenzy of 1979's "Transmission", the glacial majesty of 1980's "Atmosphere" and the horribly apt "Love Will Tear Us Apart".
I can't, just listen to this album and you will know what I mean, this is all about atmosphere and Ian bringing you on his dark descent into his world.

 Joy Division History
They released 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' in April, and with momentum building in the US they were due to take off for their first ever tour of the States.
This, along with 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (the nearest they got to an anthem), was hymnal, elegant stuff, full of resignation and doomed romance, a far more epic sound than they'd suggested they were about before.
They will probably chart, but, whilst a few weeks ago, this would be the best thing in the world to happen in the music biz, now such an achievement would ring hollow, and frustrating.

Adrenaline shoots into the bloodstream when a person thinks about or lays eyes on their loved one, the pupils dilate, the heart speeds up, blood is diverted away from non-vital organs such as the stomach and you start to sweat more.
The results of psychological experiments in the US, published last year, showed that the "quality" of a relationship could be indicated by certain physiological parameters, such as the status of each partners' immune systems or the balance of hormones in their bodies.
These changes will tend to follow a set pattern: the brain registers the psychological and social variables, it responds through the central nervous system and issues instructions for the release of hormones into the body.
