 Encyclopedia: Berlin Wall
Tear down this wall is the famous challenge from a speech by Ronald Reagan, the 40th US president, who is credited by his supporters with winning the Cold War.
The fall of the wall considerably changed traffic patterns in the city, and the M-Bahn, a maglev system connecting three metro stations over 1.6 km (1 mile), was demolished just months after its official opening in July 1991 as its track area was desperately needed for new west-east connections.
The Wall was physically destroyed almost everywhere, except for three locations: one section of 80 meters near Potsdamer Platz (see picture), a second longer one along the Spree River near the Oberbaumbrücke, the so-called East Side Gallery, and a third one in the north at Bernauer Straße, which was turned into a memorial in 1999.

The wall does not follow the Green Line, the 1967 boundary between Israel and Palestine that is generally accepted as the border between these two entities.
There are serious fears that Palestinians caught between the wall and the Green Line will find life so intolerable that they will move to what remains of the West Bank on the eastern side of the wall, thereby creating a new generation of refugees.
The time has come to condemn the wall as an act of unlawful annexation in the language of Security Council Resolutions 478 and 497, which declare that Israel's actions aimed at the annexation of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights are "null and void" and should not be recognized by states.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | World court tells Israel to tear down illegal wall
The judges told Israel to tear it down and compensate the victims.
"The court considers that the construction of the wall and its associated regime create a fait accompli on the ground that could well become permanent, in which case, and notwithstanding the formal characterisation of the wall by Israel, it would be tantamount to de facto annexation," it said.
Israel, which refused to put its case to the court because it said the ICJ had no jurisdiction, has previously argued that the fourth Geneva convention governing the treatment of civilians in occupied territories, and various elements of international humanitarian law, are not applicable in the West Bank.

Punching holes in wireless data's walled garden content strategy When Rafael Boza stepped in front of a crowded room on a snowy December day in Chicago, he delivered a presentation that might be considered heretical to some carriers.
Under the walled garden strategy, users are only given access to a set of content headings such as news, traffic, weather and sports contained on the service providers' servers.
"The idea of creating the walled garden, whether it's a wireless carrier trying to control the first four lines of the WAP screen or a wired portal, is going to run into the same problem and cause the same impediments," Boza said.

Global Spin: Tear down the wall?
I saw the Berlin wall before it was torn down; here was the burgeoning western city on one side and the drab, gray, rectangular cement buildings of the Eastern Bloc on the other.
If one looked above and beyond the top of the wall -- which was massive, big enough to lay on top of comfortably -- one saw guard towers, razor wire and crosses were people had died trying to escape to the west.
And for the destruction of THAT to be compared to pulling down a silly statue during a questionable war in front of three people is ludicrous at best.
