What Tears for Fears were about was singing that which could not be said.
This was music for and by people who had trouble expressing their emotions, and the history of Tears for Fears is an evolution of that ability, from "Change", which is about someone trying to break out of a rut, to "Break It Down Again", which is about deconstructing yourself and making a new start.

This is the third album from 80's duo Tears For Fears, and it has a very 'live' feel to it compared to the first two albums, 'The Hurting' and 'Songs from the Big Chair'.
Whilst Tears For Fears was finding its footing with 'The Hurting' and discovering computer programming and drum looping with 'Songs from the Big Chair', this album is much more influenced by jazz compositions and cabaret performances, especially the tracks featuring Oleta Adams, who gives a whole new layer to the Tears For Fears sound.
Oleta Adams was 'discovered' by Tears For Fears in a cabaret in New Orleans during the 'Songs from the Big Chair' tour, and her voice and attitude on stage mesmerized Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal so much so that she became a major influence on this album.

Tears for Fears first came on the scene in the early 1980's with "The Hurting".
And, truth to tell, Tears For Fears, (or, at least the name) wasn't completely dead - Roland Orzabal, musical trooper that he is, was still able to come up with two or three more solid, well-performed and composed albums during the interim period, under name of the band one presumes he created, and copyrighted.
For hardcore, and bereft fans, the three solo albums that had been released under the TFF name had to sustain (along with the original group efforts), while waiting the long years for the news that the two-man band, and their ensemble of studio musicians, might reunite.

Tears for Fears - Biography - AOL Music
From the beginning, the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were tackling big subjects -- their very name derived from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut, The Hurting.
On the strength of the adult contemporary hit "Break It Down Again," Elemental became a modest hit, reaching gold status in the U.S., yet was hardly up to the group's previous levels.

Tears for Fears: Everybody Loves a Happy Ending - PopMatters Music Review
In many ways, Tears for Fears were the quintessential '80s band, its catalog rife with the ubiquitous synth-pop of its time.
Perhaps this was because TFF, more than most other bands, criticized the excesses of the 1980s even while they were embracing them in their larger-than-life songs, notably "Shout".
If, as the liner notes suggest, Happy Ending is this incarnation of TFF's swan song, Orzabal and Smith can rest assured that they've bowed out with their integrity and legacy fully intact, having retaken their positions on the big chair for the fleeting moments which remain before this wave of '80s romanticism ends.
