Prophet (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Prophets, also known as Wormhole Aliens, are non-corporeal beings who inhabit the artificially constructed Bajoran wormhole which connects a distant point in the Gamma Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant, near the planet of Bajor and the space station Deep Space Nine.
The Bajoran people worship the Prophets as gods, in a religion referred to as The Way of the Prophets; this is because the Wormhole Aliens have sent prophecies, as well as mysterious spiritual devices called Orbs or Tears of the Prophets, to Bajor.
At some point in the distant past, some prophets were forcibly expelled from their wormhole home, and chose to reside on Bajor, where they became known as the mythical Pah Wraiths.

Bajoran religious beliefs hold that the home of the Prophets, the Celestial Temple, is in the Denorios Belt and most Bajorans believe the wormhole to be the manifestation of this temple in the corporeal world.
Bajoran tradition holds that the Prophets were responsible for the nine Orbs that served as sources of wisdom for the people of Bajor.
He is rescued by the Prophets and kept in the Bajoran wormhole for 200 years, but is eventually returned to his own time with his memories of the ordeal removed.

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame-who set their mind on earthly things.
The psalmists often wrote in tears, the prophets could hardly conceal their heavyheartedness, and the apostle Paul in his otherwise joyous epistle to the Philippians broke into tears when he thought of the many who were enemies of the cross of Christ and whose end was destruction.
There is no power in tears per se, but tears and power ever lie close together in the Church of the First-born....

 Bajoran
The Bajoran religion is a major unifying force on the planet; the spiritual leader, or Kai, wields a great deal of moral and political authority, although the planet's de jure political leader is the First Minister.
The Bajoran religion is based upon the revelations of the Bajoran Prophets[?], who come to be known as the timeless beings residing in the Bajoran Wormhole[?], or Celestial Temple.
Part of the Bajoran religion involves the use of the Tears of the Prophets, reality-distorting energy orbs produced by the Prophets.

And it was “Tears of the Prophets” that brought about this darkness, sending the characters off on their most personal journey.
Aside from being the obvious action-packed season ending, “Tears of the Prophets” upped the ante for the whole Dominon War (which is already ripping the Alpha Quadrant in half) by eliminating the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant.
“Tears of the Prophets” was the starting point for a journey for each of the major characters that would extend to the very end of the seventh season.

[DS9] Jammer's Review: "Tears of the Prophets"
Ever since "Sacrifice of Angels," it has become clear that Sisko's relationship with the Prophets would become increasingly important--not just in what it means to Sisko as the Emissary and to the Bajoran people, but also because the Prophets have been taking action in ways that directly affect the state of the Alpha Quadrant.
Seeing this vivid connection between the Prophets and the Emissary is one of the mythical elements of DS9 has always given the series an aura of faith beyond its sci-fi conventions.
His decision to ignore the Prophets' warning was an agonizing choice he had to make in the best interests of the Alpha Quadrant, and his subsequent decision to take a leave of absence after everything goes wrong--which was the true hard-hitting moment of the episode for me--seemed like a choice that Sisko was forced into.

The Trek Nation - The Tears of the Prophets
The captain agrees to let Jake come on the Defiant as an observer, but is disturbed by a vision of the Prophets in the forms of his war allies, warning him that he is of Bajor and it is very dangerous to leave his destined path.
On the bridge of the Defiant in the midst of the battle, Sisko collapses, saying he felt the Prophets reach out to him and that something is terribly wrong ("I felt a great disturbance in the Force...").
Weyoun and Damar had a witty discussion about whether or not the Prophets are gods, with Weyoun saying of course not, the FOUNDERS are gods...the point being, perhaps, that when beings possess powers completely beyond the scope and understanding of humanoids, it doesn't matter whether one calls them gods or not.

Presumably the intention here was to pull all the dangling plot threads from this season together into one cohesive whole, but the execution is weak and slipshod, with little feeling that a climax is coming.
Things start to come together in the second half, as Sisko ignores the Prophets' advice to stay on Bajor and leads the combined Klingon-Romulan-Starfleet forces in a grand battle against a few automated weapons platforms and some suicidal Jem'Hadar.
The most intriguing aspect of this season finalé has to be Sisko's situation at the end - feeling responsible for Jadzia's death and the loss of the Prophets, he decides he needs some quiet time for personal contemplation, so he goes back to Earth to peel potatoes in his father's kitchen.

Orb - Memory Alpha - A Wikia wiki
Orbs, also known as Tears of the Prophets, are mysterious artifacts that originate from non-corporeal entities known as the Prophets, who reside inside the Celestial Temple (aka the Bajoran wormhole).
They produce temporary but intense metaphorical hallucinations on people in the immediate vicinity, which seems to be a form of direct or indirect communication with the Prophets.
Moore has said that it is a "distinct possibility" that the Prophets have also sent Orbs to other races in the Gamma Quadrant.

[DS9] Jammer's Review: "Image in the Sand"
The story basically picks up right where "Tears of the Prophets" left off, never mind that three months of time has gone by.
The characters have all been in a sort of limbo over the hiatus--which is sometimes spelled out a little too loudly in the dialog--but three months off for Sisko seems like an appropriate amount of time for him to linger in confusion.
We've always known that the Prophets consider Sisko to be "of Bajor." This connection might explain why.
