Topic: Teatro di Marcello

  Theater of Marcellus, Rome
The Romans had seen in Greece how theaters with a semicircular auditorium could be built against the slope of a hill, thus avoiding the necessity of a costly building operation to provide support for the tiers of seating, and the same technique could well have been applied in Rome, which had plenty of hills.
The restoration of the theater, begun in 1989, is expected to continue into the mid-1990s.

Moving up the Via del Teatro di Marcello in full sun, we saw the impressive arcading of the structure which gave the street its name, having survived by being incorporated into a medieval palazzo.
From there it was downhill on the Via del Teatro di Marcello; we crossed over just after the Teatro and took the Ponte Fabriccio onto the Isola Tiberina (the kids didn't realize it was an island at first), on which an outdoor cinema had been set up.

Italian Travel Team - Rome Theaters
The Roman theatre, differing from Greek one, was built completely over ground and the weight of the tiers of seats was supported by wallsof which the arch constituted the fundamental element, both functional and esthetic.
Two admirable examples are still in Rome: the Teatro di Marcellus and the Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseum, built by the Emperor Vespasiano.
The Roman theatre, not depending on the inclination of the land, to support the tiers, was an autonomous construction, and so could be placed inside the city usually constituting one of the principal centres of attraction.
