 Tebibyte Definition
A tebibyte is a unit of data storage that equals 2 to the 40th power, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
This is to avoid the ambiguity associated with the size of terabytes.
A tebibyte is 1,024 gibibytes and precedes the pebibyte unit of measurement.

Terabyte   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
To clarify the distinction between decimal and binary prefixes, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a standards body, in 1998 defined new prefixes by combining the International System of Units SI prefix with the word "binary" (see Binary prefix).
Thus meaning (2) is called by the IEC a tebibyte (TiB), and meaning (1) is called by the IEC a terabyte.
This naming convention has not, as of 2004, been widely adopted.

Because of irregularities in using the binary prefix in the definition and usage of the kilobyte, the exact number in common practice could be either one of the following:

The prefix "tera" originates from the Greek word teras meaning 'monster'.

After an appropriate gestation, out has popped the kibibyte and kibibit, which represent exactly 1,024 bytes or 1,024 bits, respectively.
We now also have the mebibyte, the gibibyte, the tebibyte, the pebibyte, and the exbibyte!
Now, my challenge to you, other than to remember to use this new terminology, is to say "mebibyte" and "exbibyte" quickly, 10 times each.

This means that very large files can be operated on by mapping the entire file into the process' address space (which is generally faster than working with file read/write calls), rather than having to map regions of the file into and out of the address space.
Most operating systems and applications will not need such a large address space for the foreseeable future (for example, Windows implementations for AMD64 are only populating 16 tebibytes, or 44 bits' worth), so supporting such wide virtual addresses would simply increase the complexity and cost of address translation with no real benefit.
AMD therefore decided that, in the first implementations of the architecture, only the least significant 48 bits of a virtual address would actually be used in address translation (page table lookup).

I have a message format that would allow gigantically huge messages, on the order of a tebibyte in size.
It's highly unlikely that there will ever be any messages that large.
If that's true, let's determine the overhead of the worst case - infinite message size (so unchunked overhead approaches zero), generously large headers (say, 5 bytes offset (good for the full tebibyte at one-byte granularity), 5 bytes length (likewise), and SHA-512 means 64 bytes MAC), and stingy chunk sizes (say, 4,096 bytes including headers).

Highwinds Media Group - Introducing Wind Tunnel
A great deal of confusion surrounds the terms Kilobyte, Megabyte, Gigabyte, etc. In an effort to follow convention, Highwinds uses the standard adopted by the International Electrotechnical Commission.
For measurement, reporting, and billing of WindTunnel services, Highwinds uses the proper decimal notation for Megabyte, Gigabyte, and Terabyte as differentiated from their binary counterparts Mebibyte, Gibibyte, and Tebibyte as defined in IEC standard 60027.
Please refer to the IEC website for more information.

Here I probably actually meant to say: If I'm selling, given that same fixed price, then I want to sell one terabyte, not the approximately 1.099511627776 terabytes that is one tebibyte.
