Tecciztecatl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Aztec mythology, Tecciztecatl ("old moon god"; also Tecuciztecal, Tecuciztecatl) was a lunar deity, representing the old "man-on-the-moon".
He could have been the sun god, but he feared the sun's fire, so Nanahuatzin became the sun god and Tecciztecatl (in the form of a rabbit) was promptly thrown into the moon.
In some depictions he carried a large, white seashell on his back, representing the moon itself; in others he had butterfly wings.

A feminine lunar connection is easily overstated, however, for male lunar gods are also frequent, such as Nanna or Sin of the Mesopotamians, Mani of the Germanic tribes, Thoth of the Egyptians, the Japanese god Tsukiyomi, and Tecciztecatl of the Aztecs.
In Norse mythology, Mani was the god of the moon and a son of Mundilfari and Glaur.

Then the lowliest of all the gods, Nanautzin, dressed in humble garments of woven reeds, misshapen, ugly, and covered with scabs, offered to renew the world and light up the sun by jumping into the fire.

One was Nanahuatl, the "Pimply One," the other, Tecciztecatl, "He of the Conch Shell." They were distinct opposites, one handsome, the other ugly, one wealthy, the other poor.
In the end the ugly one, Nanahuatl, took the plunge first and became the greater light, the handsome one, Tecciztecatl, was fainthearted, took the leap of immolation second, and eventually became the moon.
Nanahuatl is associated with Quetzalcoatl, Tecciztecatl with Tezcatlipoca.

 History of the Maya
Teotihuacán (place of the gods), was founded early in the first century as a religious centre in a fertile valley 50 km northeast of today's Mexico City where, according to the legend, the gods had met to determine which of them would bring light to the earth that was still dark and lifeless.
Two volunteers had approached the sacrificial fire, handsome Tecciztecatl and ugly Nanauatl who jumped in without hesitation and was transformed into a bright sun while Tecciztecatl, who hesitated, was transformed into a pale moon.
The cult of the Sun and the Moon was successful in arousing religious fervour mobilising large populations into building an empire that dominated the central Mexican highlands for more than seven centuries.
