The Seattle Times: Nation & World: No-sex pledge won't cut risk, study finds
Teenagers who take virginity pledges — public declarations to abstain from sex — are almost as likely to be infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as those who never made the pledge, according to an eight-year study released yesterday.
Although young people who sign a virginity pledge delay the initiation of sexual activity, marry at younger ages and have fewer sexual partners, they also were less likely to use condoms and more likely to experiment with riskier activities such as oral and anal sex, said the researchers from Yale and Columbia universities.
Virginity pledges emerged in the early 1990s based on the theory that young people would remain chaste if they had broader community support — or pressure — to remain abstinent.

The Body: Virginity Pledge Did Not Prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections
About 80% of those studied never reported taking a virginity pledge, 13% said they had pledged but in a later 5-year followup said they had not (they were counted as inconsistent pledgers in the study), leaving only 7% of "consistent pledgers," who reported at least once that they had pledged and never said otherwise.
For us, the take-home message is that virginity pledges were not associated with reduction of sexually transmitted infections (again, HIV was not measured here) in this large and fairly representative U.S. study -- even though behavior changes that would seem to be protective were associated with the pledges.
The reason for this paradox may have been that most of those who took the pledges did not stay with them, and then skipped precautions because they were reluctant to be seen as breaking their public pledge.

 Halfway Isn’t the Whole Truth
“Technical virginity” is a cop-out for hormone-ravaged teenagers who want to satisfy their sexual cravings and desires by doing everything without actually doing it.
Many of the "technical virgins" are young girls who perform a delicate balancing act between morality and pressure from sexy media images.
Unfortunately, those who have taken the “Technical Virgin” pledge, and urge others to do the same, are blinded by the fact that once one has any type of sexual relations with another person, one is no longer a virgin or pure.

The government-funded study, which examined the effectiveness of virginity pledges in reducing STD infection rates, found that although the pledgers are consistently less likely to be exposed to risk factors, their STD rate does not significantly differ from nonpledgers.
The data was compiled from a nationally representative study of students enrolled in grades 7-12 in 1995, and a follow-up survey in 2001-2002.
"The sad story is that kids who are trying to preserve their technical virginity are, in some cases, engaging in much riskier behavior," said Peter S. Bearman, a professor at Columbia's Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy and a lead author of the study.

In object-oriented programs built in layers, an object at a higher level of abstraction is implemented by objects at lower levels of abstraction.
This paper unveils some difficulties in writing procedure specifications strong enough to guarantee that a lower-level object can be used in the implementation of another object at a higher level of abstraction.
To overcome these difficulties, the paper presents "virginity", a convenient way of specifying that an object is not globally reachable and thus can safely be used in the implementation of a higher-level abstraction.
