Techno-thriller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Techno-thrillers are a hybrid genre, drawing subject matter generally from spy thrillers, war novels, and science fiction.
Techno-thrillers tend to have a broad scope in the narrative, and can often be regarded as contemporary speculative fiction—world wars are a common topic—and techno-thrillers often overlap, as far as the genre goes, with near-future science fiction.
Michael Crichton is often regarded as the grandfather of the genre, his 1969 novel The Andromeda Strain combining elements of rigorous, hard science fiction and detective fiction in a thriller context.

Mystery Guide - Thriller subgenre page
The average thriller is longer than the average mystery, which makes a rapid pace essential to success; when skillfully written, thrillers can also carry the load of bigger themes than strict realism will allow.
Thriller is among the most loosely-used terms in the genre, being applied to any book with even a little action or adventure.
Almost all thriller protagonists are male, and they usually aren't the weedy, whiny, Woody Allen type either.

Legal thrillers explore the nuances of law, techno-thrillers explore the nuances of scientific or military conflict.
The same situation applies with romance novels and love stories.

Since Tom Clancy writes detailed techno thrillers, making such comparisons meaningless and absurd, a better comparison might be made between Hannibal Jones to the "Lucas Davenport" character of the Prey series by John Sandford.
Both authors are writing books that do not share connections of style, character development, plotting, pacing, or anything else in common other than the fact they both release books printed on paper.
This author and his three mystery novels to date are well worth the read and worthy of a place on your bookshelf.
