With the new DOOM game we have been able to do what I think is one of the most important things for our game engines here, is the way we have unified the way in which all of our surfaces and lights interact.
The technologies that have followed from the original DOOM have brought freedom to the artists who are now able to truly bring their visions to life.
Every generation of technology that John Carmack has created has raised the bar for the industry, and really set an example that other programmers have used to follow, in creating their next generation technology.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Review: Doom 3 lets Hell break loose
Doom 3 manages it with gusto, combining hectic gameplay with genuine shocks to deliver a deliciously uncomfortable gaming experience.
Doom 3 is ultimately a technically-sophisticated remake of a decade-old game, novel in its day but still a simplistic opus of running around corridors shooting at things.
Speaking of Hell, that is a hotspot you end up in during Doom 3's latter stages, and it consolidates the game's mightily impressive capacity to generate a fearful atmosphere.

All games (well most) prior to now use pre-computed static lightmaps blended with the base texture to light their world, these maps are produced at design time along with the BSP tree from the game editor.
On top of all this doom doesn't just calculate standard diffuse lighting for its surfaces (like Quake) it is a lot more complex.
Once loaded into the game engine they look very pretty but they are static, thus a light positioned near a wall when building your level originally, could not be turned off at a later time (in the game engine) as the calculations have already been done.

The addition of two new weapons, the double-barrel shotgun and the ionized plasma levitator, also known as the grabber, is a sad attempt to add variety to an already ample arsenal.
This makes for a much less enjoyable experience than Doom 3, where you had to scramble, shoot and run due to the number of enemies on screen and their high tolerance to weapons.

Doom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Distributed as shareware, Doom was downloaded by an estimated 10 million people within two years, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture; as a sign of its impact on the industry, games from the mid-1990s boom of first-person shooters are often known simply as "Doom clones".

Doom was and remains notorious for its high levels of violence, gore, and satanic imagery, which have generated much controversy from a broad range of groups.

It's time to take another crack at 'Doom' - Orlando Sentinel : Technology
But with its almost over-the-top sci-fi setting (a Martian colony that finds itself doing double-duty as the literal gateway to hell), there is no way any reasonable gamer could confuse "Doom 3's" ultra-violence for reality, and the game's M (Mature) rating reinforces id's efforts to address an audience that properly understands the game.
This is a minor initial disappointment: You would expect that, with all the other miracles id provides in "Doom 3," a more robust multi-player mode would be in the offing -- especially because detailed online play is such an important feature in pretty much every PC first-person shooter released now.
Much of "Doom 3" takes place in the dark, allowing id to pull out some of the hoariest tricks from horror shows.
