About twenty miles south of Tecopa and set amid the steep volcanic hills are the sand dunes, ranging in elevation from 700 to 1200 feet.
From the number of vehicles dumping their tanks at the County RV Park in Tecopa on Sunday of the recent Thanksgiving weekend, it doesn't seem like the permits are a deterrent to the family outings.

I'd been wanting to visit Tecopa for years, but wanted a guide for my first visit, since the place is unusual and unique.
First off, the central feature of the area, the Tecopa Hot Springs, is a sex-segregated, county-owned, public bathhouse which is (as far as I know, and if I'm wrong, I'd love to know it) the only publicly owned recreational facility in the U.S. with mandatory nudity.
The elephant in the room at Tecopa Hot Springs is the recent (less than a year ago) takeover of management operations by a private firm called CLM.

Karl and I visited the wild spa near Tecopa Hot Springs three times this past weekend; twice in the daytime, and once in the middle of the night.
When I read about Tecopa on-line there seems to be a general frustration about being unable to actually FIND the wild spa.
In fact, while I was in "town" a hippie man in his hippie van with his topless hippie woman pulled out of a side road in front of me and (obviously frustrated) asked for directions to the one-palm spa.

There is a resort here, and I know that the owners have a very pleasant establishment, however the public baths in the town of Tecopa is in the middle of no place and consists of two, count them two, enclosed mineral pools, and a parking lot.
Some times they close one of the enclosures, so the operation hours are 3 hours for women and then 3 hours for men.
Follow the signs into Tecopa and on to the hot springs.

On our return trip over to the Tecopa mines we were able to find Old Tecopa.
This was the original Tecopa site before they moved it down into the valley to be closer to the railroad.
New Tecopa also has a cemetery, quit large and has a lot of war vets.
